32-53 The people expressed great joy and satisfaction in the elevation of Solomon. Every true Israelite rejoices in the exaltation of the Son of David. Combinations formed upon evil principles will soon be dissolved, when self-interest calls another way. How can those who do evil deeds expect to have good tidings? Verse 39. _ZADOK - TOOK A HORN OF OIL_] _Pottery_ and _glass_ were little in use in those times; and _horns_ were frequently used to hold _oil_ and _wine_. The oil used here was the _holy anointing oil_, which was laid up in the tabernacle, and which was used for the anointing of both _priests_ and _kings_....

EXPOSITION THE REVOLT OF ADONIJAH AND THE ACCESSION OF SOLOMON.—The first chapter of this book is occupied with the accession of Solomon and with the circumstances which preceded, marked, and followed that event. The author, or compiler, evidently considered that his work properly began with the reign of Israel's third king, and David's illness and death are only introduced into the narrative because they necessitated a hasty and premature coronation of Solomon, and exercised an important influence on the beginning of his reign (1 Kings 2:1). _a horn of oil_ The Hebrew has THE _horn_. The -holy anointing oil" was no doubt preserved for occasions like this, and for the anointing of the priests. Zadok having the care of the tabernacle at Gibeon (1 Chronicles 16:39) would have this under his charge. And as Gibeon was -the great high place" (1 Kings 3:4), all that was most sacred would be kept there. _out of the tabernacle_ The word here rendered -tabernacle" is not the same as that so rendered in the passage from 1 Chron. just quoted, and it is advisable to make a distinction between them.
