25-34 During the single reign of Asa in Judah, the government of Israel was in six or seven different hands. Observe the ruin of the family of Jeroboam; no word of God shall fall to the ground. Divine threatenings are not designed merely to terrify. Ungodly men execute the just judgments of God upon each other. But in the midst of dreadful sins and this apparent confusion, the Lord carries on his own plan: when it is fully completed, the glorious justice, wisdom, truth, and mercy therein displayed, shall be admired and adored through all the ages of eternity....

EXPOSITION THE REIGNS OF NADAB, BAASHA, ELAH, ZIMRI, AND OMRI, KINGS OF ISRAEL.—After bringing up the history of the kings of Judah, which has engaged his pen since 1 Kings 14:21, to the date of the death of Asa, our author goes back some forty years to record the contemporary history of the kingdom of Israel, with which the rest of this book, the last thirteen verses alone excepted, is occupied. On the other hand, none of these reigns are even noticed by the chronicler, who only refers to the history of Israel, so far as it is inextricably connected with the object of his work; in other words, so far as is necessary to explain or illustrate the reigns of the kings of Judah

1 KINGS 15:33 TO 1 KINGS 16:34. BAASHA'S DYNASTY. RISE OF THE HOUSE OF OMRI. Nothing is told us of Baasha except the usual annalistic details, and, that a prophet named Jehu foretold the destruction of his whole house. His son Elah was at war with the Philistines (1 Kings 16:15), but remained at Tirzah (p. 30), which at this time was the chief residence of the kings of Israel. IN TIRZAH. See notes on 1 Kings 14:17 and 1 Kings 15:21. TWENTY AND FOUR YEARS. Began in the third year of Asa. Therefore he died in the twenty-sixth year of Asa (1 Kings 16:8). Yet in the thirty-sixth year Baasha came and made war against Judah (2 Chronicles 16:1). This would be nine or ten years after he was dead. But see note on 2 Chronicles 16:1, where the word "reign" should be rendered "kingdom": i.e. the thirty-sixth year from the kingdom of Israel. See App-50....

_in Tirzah, twenty and four years_ To complete the sense the R.V. inserts in italics after -Tirzah" the words - _and reigned_." Tirzah seems to have become by this time a more common royal residence than Shechem. Perhaps its extreme beauty attracted the kings and their families. Cf. Sol. Song of Solomon 6:4, -Thou art beautiful as Tirzah"....

B. THE BAASHA DYNASTY 15:32-16:14 The Baasha dynasty receives the most cursory treatment from the author of Kings. Political accomplishments of Baasha are almost totally ignored, as the author has elected to focus on the prophetic curse which ultimately brought destruction to this dynasty.
