It is implied in 2 Chronicles 11:20-14 that he was not the firstborn among Rehoboam's twenty-eight sons, but the eldest son of the favourite wife. As he left behind him thirty-eight children ...

AND ABIJAM SLEPT WITH HIS FATHERS,.... That is, died as they did: AND THEY BURIED HIM IN THE CITY OF DAVID, in the sepulchre of his royal ancestors, David, Solomon, and Rehoboam: AND ASA HIS SON REIGNED IN HIS STEAD; who perhaps was the eldest of his twenty two sons, 2 Chronicles 13:21....

3. ABIJAM AND ASA, KINGS OF JUDAH CHAPTER 15 _ 1. Abijam of Judah (1 Kings 15:1; 2 Chronicles 13)_ 2. Asa of Judah (1 Kings 15:9; 1 Kings 2 Chronicles 14-16) Abijam is called in Chronicles Abijah; in 2 Chronicles 13:21 he is called Abijahu. Abijam was undoubtedly the older form. ABIJAM AND ASA OF JUDAH, AND NADAB AND BAASHA OF ISRAEL. Abijam, called Abijah (2 Chronicles 13:1), had a short and evil reign. It would appear, notwithstanding 1 Kings 15:8, that he was succeeded by his brother Asa, as both are said to have had the same mother, Maacah, the daughter of Abishalom. Josephus says the granddaughter of Absalom; see 2 Chronicles 11:20). Except that Asa could not remove the high places he is said to have done right during his long reign of forty-one years. _And Abijam slept with his fathers_ To this the LXX. adds -in the twenty-fourth year of Jeroboam." This statement does not quite agree with the chronology given in 1 Kings 15:1-2 of this chapter, and repeated in 2 Chronicles 13:1-2. If Abijam came to the throne in the 18th year of Jeroboam and reigned 3 years, his death would fall in the twenty-first year of Jeroboam, or if the three years of his reign were incomplete at the beginning and end it might occur, as is said immediately in 1 Kings 15:9, in the 20th year of Jeroboam....

(2) Three years he reigned in Jerusalem; and the name of his mother was Maachah the daughter of Abishalom. (3) And he walked in all the sins of his father which he had done before him; and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God like the heart of David his father. (4) But for the sake of David, the LORD his God gave to him a lamp in Jerusalem, to raise up his son after him and to cause Jerusalem to stand; (5) because David had done that which was upright in the eyes of the LORD, and did not turn aside from all which He commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. (6) And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days of his life. (7) And the rest of the deeds of Abijam and all which he did, are they...

THE REIGNS OF ABIJAM AND ASA, NADAB AND BAASHA 2. Abishalom] i.e. Absalom. In 2 Chronicles 13:2 his mother is called Micaiah, the daughter of Uriel, and if this is correct, Absalom was probably her grandfather, and her mother the Tamar mentioned in 2 Samuel 14:27....
