_AND I WILL RAISE ME UP A FAITHFUL PRIEST, THAT SHALL DO ACCORDING TO THAT WHICH IS IN MINE HEART AND IN MY MIND: AND I WILL BUILD HIM A SURE HOUSE; AND HE SHALL WALK BEFORE MINE ANOINTED FOR EVER._ I will raise me up a faithful priest. Although not expressed, it is plainly implied that this priest should be in another line, which was fulfilled the person of Zadok, who was eminent for his fidelity both to God and to the king (1 Kings 2:27; 1 Kings 2:35; 1 Chronicles 29:22). 27-36 Those who allow their children in any evil way, and do not use their authority to restrain and punish them, in effect honour them more than God. Let Eli's example excite parents earnestly to strive against the beginnings of wickedness, and to train up their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. In the midst of the sentence against the house of Eli, mercy is promised to Israel. God's work shall never fall to the ground for want of hands to carry it on. Christ is that merciful and faithful High Priest, whom God raised up when the Levitical priesthood was thrown off, who in all things did his Father's mind, and for whom God will build a sure house, build it on a rock, so that hell cannot prevail against it....

Verse 1 Samuel 2:35. _A FAITHFUL PRIEST_] This seems to have been spoken of Zadok, who was anointed high priest in the room of Abiathar, the last descendant of the house of Eli; see 1 Kings 2:26; 1 Kings 2:27. Abiathar was removed because he had joined with Adonijah, who had got himself proclaimed king; see 1 Kings 1:7. _I WILL BUILD HIM A SURE HOUSE_] I will continue the priesthood in his family. _HE SHALL WALK BEFORE MINE ANOINTED_] He shall minister before Solomon, and the _kings_ which shall reign in the land. Zadok is meant rather than Samuel. The High Priesthood continued in the direct descendants of Zadok as long as the monarchy lasted (see 1 Chronicles 6:8). MINE ANOINTED - in its first sense obviously means the kings of Israel and Judah Psalms 89:20; Zechariah 4:14. But doubtless the use of the term MESSIAH (Χριστὸς _Christos_) here and in 1 Samuel 2:10, is significant, and points to the Lord’s Christ, in whom the royal and priestly offices are united ...

Composed by the Deuteronomic Editor (see above, p. 273), to connect the misconduct of the sons of Eli with the massacre of his house at Nob and deposition of his descendant, Abiathar, from the priesthood in favour of the house of Zadok (1 Kings 2:26 f.); and perhaps also with the unhappy condition of the priests of the high places, after these were suppressed (2 Kings 23:8 f.), though there is no indication that the priests of the high-places as a class were reckoned descendants of Eli. 1 SAMUEL 2:27. The doom of Eli's house 27. _a man of God_ i.e. a prophet commissioned by God. Even in the general decay of religion (1 Samuel 3:1) God still had his messengers. The title "man of God" is applied to Moses, Samuel, Elijah, Elisha, and others. It is specially frequent in the Books of Kings. _Did I plainly appear_ Better, _Did I indeed reveal myself_.
