1-11 Jehoram hated his brethren, and slew them, for the same reason that Cain hated Abel, and slew him, because their piety condemned his impiety. In the mystery of Providence such men sometimes prosper for a time; but the Lord has righteous purposes in permitting such events, part of which may now be made out, and the rest will be seen hereafter....

Verse 2 Chronicles 21:2. _AND HE HAD BRETHREN - THE SONS OF JEHOSHAPHAT, KING OF_ _ISRAEL._] Jehoshaphat certainly was not king of _Israel_, but king of _Judah_. ישראל Yisrael must be a corruption in the text, for יהודה _Yehudah_; which is the reading of the _Syriac, Arabic,_ _Septuagint_, and _Vulgate_: the _Chaldee_, only agrees with the Hebrew text. And the reading of the _versions_ is supported by _thirty-eight_ of _Kennicott's_ and _De Rossi's_ MSS. The word _Judah_ should therefore be restored to the text....

EXPOSITION The matter of this chapter may be divided into four parts. The death and burial of Jehoshaphat, and the number, names, and position of his sons (2 Chronicles 21:1). The accession and wicked course of Jehoram, the eldest son (2 Chronicles 21:4). The written warning and denunciation of Elijah, and the very practical warning of the Philistines, etc. (2 Chronicles 21:12). AND HE HAD BRETHREN, THE SONS OF JEHOSHAPHAT,.... That is, Jehoram had, who succeeded him: their names follow, AZARIAH, AND JEHIEL, AND ZECHARIAH, AND AZARIAH, AND MICHAEL, AND SHEPHATIAH; two of them were of the same name; though it may be observed, that in the Hebrew text they are somewhat distinguished, the latter is called Azariah; Jehiel is said, by the Jews x, to be the same with Hiel that rebuilt Jericho; indeed it was rebuilt in the times of Jehoshaphat, and was a city of the tribe of Benjamin, Joshua 18:21 which was under his jurisdiction; but it can never be thought that he would ever suffer a son of his to rebuild it; besides, he is expressly said to be a Bethelite, 1 Kings 16:34, ALL THESE WERE THE SONS OF JEHOSHAPHAT KING OF ISRAEL; which generally, sinc

ISRAEL. This word was originally represented by the abbreviation (i or y), which was read for "Israel" as well as Judah. The reading in the Severus Codex (see App-34) is "Judah", and this is supported by the first edition of the _Hagiographa_ (Naples, 1486-1487), the Complutensian Polyglot, Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulgate. This same note applies to 2 Chronicles 28:19, where the same phenomena occur....

The Names and the Fate of the other Sons of Jehoshaphat 2. _brethren the sons of Jehoshaphat_ It was necessary to define _brethren_, for the word by itself means no more than "kinsmen"; cp. 1 Chronicles 12:2 (note). _Azariah_ Since this name is repeated (with a slight variation of spelling) in the list it is probable that the text is corrupt. The error may be no more than the omission of some epithet which distinguished one Azariah from the other in the original text of the list.
