12-20 A warning from God was sent to Jehoram. The Spirit of prophecy might direct Elijah to prepare this writing in the foresight of Jehoram's crimes. He is plainly told that his sin should certainly ruin him. But no marvel that sinners are not frightened from sin, and to repentance, by the threatenings of misery in another world, when the certainty of misery in this world, the sinking of their estates, and the ruin of their health, will not restrain them from vicious courses. See Jehoram here stripped of all his comforts. Thus God plainly showed that the controversy was with him, and his house. He had slain all his brethren to strengthen himself; now, all his sons are slain but one. David's house must not be wholly destroyed, like those of Israel's kings, because a blessing was in it; that of the Messiah. Good men may be afflicted with diseases; but to them they are fatherly chastiseme...

Verse 2 Chronicles 21:17. _SAVE JEHOAHAZ THE YOUNGEST_] This person had at least _three_ names, _Jehoahaz, Ahaziah_, (2 Chronicles 22:1,) and _Azariah_, (2 Chronicles 22:6.)...

JEHOAHAZ - The writer of Chronicles calls him indifferently Jeboahaz and Abaziah, which are equivalent names (2 Kings 8:24 note)....

EXPOSITION The matter of this chapter may be divided into four parts. The death and burial of Jehoshaphat, and the number, names, and position of his sons (2 Chronicles 21:1). The accession and wicked course of Jehoram, the eldest son (2 Chronicles 21:4). The written warning and denunciation of Elijah, and the very practical warning of the Philistines, etc. (2 Chronicles 21:12). _and brake into it_ The proper meaning of the Heb. verb is "to make a breach in a city-wall [and so take the city]"; cp. 2 Chronicles 32:1. The word is metaphorically applied (here and Isaiah 7:6) to a whole country. _in the king's house_ R.V. mg., BELONGING TO THE KING'S HOUSE. The rendering of A.V. suggests that the allies entered Jerusalem, but this was almost certainly not the case. _Jehoahaz_ In 2 Chronicles 22:1 he is called _Ahaziah_, which is only another form of the name, the prefix _Jeho-_of the one, and the ending _-iah_of the other being each the representative of the divine name _Jehovah_.
