_HE FOUGHT ALSO WITH THE KING OF THE AMMONITES, AND PREVAILED AGAINST THEM. AND THE CHILDREN OF AMMON GAVE HIM THE SAME YEAR AN HUNDRED TALENTS OF SILVER, AND TEN THOUSAND MEASURES OF WHEAT, AND TEN THOUSAND OF BARLEY. SO MUCH DID THE CHILDREN OF AMMON PAY UNTO HIM, BOTH THE SECOND YEAR, AND THE THIRD._ He fought also with the king of the Ammonites. This invasion he not only repelled, but, pursuing the Ammonites into their own territory, imposed on them a yearly tribute, which for two years they paid; but when Rezin, king of Syria, and Pekah, king of Israel, combined to attack the kingdom of Judah, they took the opportunity of revolting, and Jotham was too distracted by other matters to attempt the re-conquest (see the note at 2 Kings 15:37)....

Verse 2 Chronicles 27:5. _HE FOUGHT ALSO WITH - THE AMMONITES_] We find here that he brought them under a heavy tribute for _three_ years; but whether this was the _effect_ of his prevailing against them, is not so evident. Some think that they paid this tribute for three years, and then revolted; that, in consequence, he attacked them, and their utter subjection was the result....

The Ammonites, who had submitted to Uzziah 2 Chronicles 26:8, revolted against Jotham. This revolt he firmly repressed; and, to punish it, he exacted a high rate of tribute for the three years following the termination of the war. The productiveness of the Ammonite country in grain, which is here indicated, has been remarked upon as extraordinary by modern travelers....

EXPOSITION This chapter of nine verses is paralleled by the seven verses of 2 Kings 15:32-12. He did also what was right in the sight of the LORD. The statement “howbeit he entered not into the temple of the LORD” means that he did not act as Uzziah, his father did, when he intruded into the functions of the priesthood. However, in spite of the good example of the king, the people continued in their departure from Jehovah. “And the people did yet corruptly.” All the evils of a false worship continued and were not stopped. (Chapter 27) INTRODUCTION Jotham avoided God's house and failed as king in Judah. The door was opened for Ahaz-' wicked reign and terrible idolatry. The Damascus altar had no place in Jerusalem. Times were ripe for Hezekiah, one of Judah's most respected kings. TEXT 2 Chronicles 27:1. Jotham was twenty and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Jerushah the daughter of Zadok. 2.
