Verse 2 Chronicles 28:6. _A HUNDRED AND TWENTY THOUSAND_] It is very probable that there is a mistake in this number. It is hardly possible that _a_ _hundred and twenty thousand_ men could have been slain in one day; yet all the _versions_ and _MSS_. agree in this number. The whole people seem to have been given up into the hands of their enemies....

The fearful loss here described may have been due to a complete defeat followed by panic....

EXPOSITION This chapter is paralleled by 2 Kings 16:1. There is a great deal gained in this case by addition on the two accounts, however. Our chapter contains the wickedness by idolatry of Ahaz, the severe punishment thereof by the King of Syria, the Syrian captivity of Judah, and the release of the latter so unexpectedly (2 Chronicles 28:1); other punishments by war of Ahaz, his hardened heart, greater sins, and end (2 Chronicles 28:16-14). Who was at this time king of Israel: SLEW IN JUDAH AN HUNDRED AND TWENTY THOUSAND IN ONE DAY, which were all VALIANT MEN; a great slaughter to be made at one time, and of valiant men, but not so great as that in 2 Chronicles 13:17, BECAUSE THEY HAD FORSAKEN THE LORD GOD OF THEIR FATHERS; this was not a reason with Pekah for slaying them, he himself being an idolater, but why the Lord suffered them to be slain by him....

THE REIGN OF AHAZ. See notes on 2 Kings 16, but the Chronicler's account of this reign is largely independent of 2 K.; he makes the Syro-Ephraimite War two separate campaigns, Ahaz being in turn defeated by the Syrians and then by the northern Israelites. This cannot be regarded as historical in face of 2 Kings 16; the Chronicler has probably reconstructed the history with a view to bringing into greater relief the punishment of Ahaz on account of his faithlessness to Yahweh. In a number of other ways this section differs from the account in 2 Kings 16. 2 Chronicles 28:27. they brought him not. : but see 2 Kings 16:20....

In the latter the failure of the allies to take Jerusalem is the chief feature in the account, while in Chron. the damage and loss inflicted on Judah takes the first place. Thus far the two accounts supplement each other....
