_BUT A PROPHET OF THE LORD WAS THERE, WHOSE NAME WAS ODED: AND HE WENT OUT BEFORE THE HOST THAT CAME TO SAMARIA, AND SAID UNTO THEM, BEHOLD, BECAUSE THE LORD GOD OF YOUR FATHERS WAS WROTH WITH JUDAH, HE HATH DELIVERED THEM INTO YOUR HAND, AND YE HAVE SLAIN THEM IN A RAGE THAT REACHETH UP UNTO HEAVEN._ No JFB commentary on these verses....

Verse 2 Chronicles 28:9. _BUT A PROPHET OF THE LORD - WHOSE NAME WAS ODED_] To this beautiful speech nothing can be added by the best comment; it is simple, humane, pious, and overwhelmingly convincing: no wonder it produced the effect mentioned here. That there was much of humanity in the heads of the children of _Ephraim_ who joined with the prophet on this occasion, the _fifteenth_ verse sufficiently proves. They did not barely dismiss these most unfortunate captives, but they took that very spoil which their victorious army had brought away; and they clothed, fed, shod, and anointed, these distressed people, set the feeblest of them upon asses, and escorted them safely to Jericho. We can scarcely find a parallel to this in the universal history of the wars which savage man has carried on against his fellows, from the foundation of the world....

Nothing more is known of this Oded. Compare 2 Chronicles 15:1. HE WENT OUT BEFORE THE HOST - Rather, “He went out to meet the host,” as the same phrase is translated in 2 Chronicles 15:2. A RAGE THAT REACHETH UP TO HEAVEN - i. e. not merely an exceedingly great and violent rage, but one that has displeased God....

EXPOSITION This chapter is paralleled by 2 Kings 16:1. There is a great deal gained in this case by addition on the two accounts, however. Our chapter contains the wickedness by idolatry of Ahaz, the severe punishment thereof by the King of Syria, the Syrian captivity of Judah, and the release of the latter so unexpectedly (2 Chronicles 28:1); other punishments by war of Ahaz, his hardened heart, greater sins, and end (2 Chronicles 28:16-14). THE REIGN OF AHAZ. See notes on 2 Kings 16, but the Chronicler's account of this reign is largely independent of 2 K.; he makes the Syro-Ephraimite War two separate campaigns, Ahaz being in turn defeated by the Syrians and then by the northern Israelites. This cannot be regarded as historical in face of 2 Kings 16; the Chronicler has probably reconstructed the history with a view to bringing into greater relief the punishment of Ahaz on account of his faithlessness to Yahweh. In a number of other ways this section differs from the account in 2 Kings 16. 2 Chronicles 28:27. they brought him not. : but see 2 Kings 16:20....

ODED. establishing. His name is prophetic. WENT OUT BEFORE THE HOST. Showing his courage. reacheth up unto heaven. Figure of speech _Hyperbole_ (App-6), to express the greatness of the rage....

_a prophet of the Lord was there_ Nothing further is known of Oded, but this may have been the only occasion on which be appeared as a prophet. _he went out before_ R.V. HE WENT OUT TO MEET. that _reacheth up_ R.V. WHICH HATH REACHED UP. Cp. Genesis 4:10. _heaven_ There is a tendency in some later books of the Bible to write "heaven" for "God"; cp. 2 Chronicles 32:20, "prayed and cried to heaven." From a similar feeling of reverence the Chronicler is sparing in his use of the name "Jehovah"; cp. 2 Chronicles 17:4 (note)....
