AS IN THE ORACLE - This passage is probably corrupt. Our translators supposing that a single letter had fallen out at the beginning of the word translated “in the oracle,” supplied “as.” But we have no reason to suppose there were any “chains” or “festoons” in the “oracle” or most holy place....

EXPOSITION 2 CHRONICLES 3:1 MOUNT MORIAH. This name מוֹריָה occurs twice in the Old Testament, viz. here and Genesis 22:2, in which latter reference it is alluded to as "the _land _of Moriah," and "one of the mountains" in it is spoken of. Whether the name designates the same place in each instance is more than doubtful. In the present passage the connection of the place with David is marked. Had it been the spot connected with Abraham and the proposed sacrifice of Isaac, it is at least probable that this also would have been emphasized, and not here only, but in 2 Samuel 24:17-10 and...

The Chronicler omits all mention of Solomon's other buildings, his interest being centred on the Temple; he has, on the other hand, many additions not found in 1 Kings. 2 CHRONICLES 3:1. The words, _in the oracle_, though found in LXX., are probably a gloss introduced from 1 Kings 6:21 (_chains … before the oracle_). The Chronicler is here speaking of the _outside_of the Temple, having already described the "oracle," i.e. the Holy of Holies, in 2 Chronicles 3:8-14. The Heb. word _děbîr_was translated "oracle" because it was supposed to be derived from a word meaning "to speak." It means, however, simply "the hindmost part" of the house (cf. 2 Chronicles 4:20; 2 Chronicles 5:7;...
