_JEHOIACHIN WAS EIGHT YEARS OLD WHEN HE BEGAN TO REIGN, AND HE REIGNED THREE MONTHS AND TEN DAYS IN JERUSALEM: AND HE DID THAT WHICH WAS EVIL IN THE SIGHT OF THE LORD._ Jehoiachin was eight years old - called also Jeconiah or Coniah (Jeremiah 22:23). "Eight" should have been 'eighteen,' probably from a mistake in transcribing the numeral letters of the Hebrew text (Kennecott), as appears from 2 Kings 24:8, and also from the full development of his ungodly principles and habits (see Ezekiel 19:5). His reign being of so short duration cannot be considered at variance with the prophetic denunciation against his father (J

See here what woful havoc sin makes, and, as we value the comfort and continuance of our earthly blessings, let us keep that worm from the root of them. They had many times ploughed and sowed their land in the seventh year, when it should have rested, and now it lay unploughed and unsown for ten times seven years. God will be no loser in his glory at last, by the disobedience of men. If they refused to let the land rest, God would make it rest. What place, O God, shall thy justice spare, if Jerusalem has perished? If that delight of thine were cut off for wickedness, let us not be high-minded, but fear....

EIGHT YEARS OLD - Rather, eighteen (see the marginal reference). Jehoiachin had several wives and (apparently) at least one child Jeremiah 22:28, when, three months later, he was carried captive to Babylon....

EXPOSITION One short chapter now brings to a conclusion the work, in so many aspects remarkable, called 'The Chronicles.' And thirteen verses sum the contents of the four last pre-Captivity kings of the line of Judah. The words of Keil, in opening this last chapter in his commentary, are not unworthy of note. He says, "As the kingdom of Judah after Josiah's death advanced with swift steps to its destruction by the Chaldeans, so the author of the Chronicle goes quickly over the reigns of the last kings of Judah, who by their godless con-duet hastened the ruin of the kingdom. As to the four kings remaining, who reigned between Josiah's death and the destruction of Jerusalem, he gives, besides their ages at their respective accessions, only a short characterization of their conduct towards God, and a statement of the main events which, step by step, brought about the ruin of the king and th...

It was the final plunge before the awful judgment overtook Jerusalem and Judah. And there will be a final plunge into apostasy in connection with the professing Church, before the predicted judgment with the coming of our blessed Lord will end this present evil age and usher in His glorious kingdom....

JAHOIACHIN. Called also Jeconiah (1 Chronicles 3:16) and Coniah (Jeremiah 22:24; Jeremiah 22:28). Compare 2 Kings 24:8. The "Je" (= Jehovah) being cut off from his name. EIGHT YEARS. Some codices, with Septuagint and Syriac, read "eight", but 2 Kings 24:8 reads "eighteen". The "eighteen" must include his co-regency, the "eight" to his reigning alone. This practice was common in Israel and Judah as well as in ancient contemporary kingdoms....

_Jehoiachin_ Called "Jeconiah," 1 Chronicles 3:16, where see note. _eight years_ So LXX. (B) of Chron. and of Esd., but the number is probably corrupt for _eighteen_(so LXX. (A) of Chron. and of Esd. and Heb. and LXX. of 2 Kings 24:8). It is possible that the clause "and ten days" below is a misplaced fragment of an original reading _ben shĕmôneh esreh shanah_, i.e. "eighteen years old." _in Jerusalem_ The Chronicler here omits the king's mother's name (cp. 2 Chronicles 36:2, note), though she was a person of some influence; cp. 2 Kings 24:12;...
