Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand. NOT FOR THAT - i:e., Not that. "Faith" is here emphatic. He had "dominion" in discipline; but in matters of, "faith" he was only a 'fellow-helper of their joy' (namely, in believing: ). The Greek is, 'Not that we lord it over your faith.' 24._Not that we exercise dominion _He anticipates an objection that might be brought forward. “What! Do you then act so tyrannically (305) as to be formidable in your very look? Such were not the gravity of a Christian pastor, but the cruelty of a savage tyrant.” He answers this objection first _indirectly, _by declaring that matters are not so; and afterwards _directly, _by showing that the very circumstance, that he had been constrained to treat them more harshly, was owing to his fatherly affection. Nothing can render God's promises more certain: his giving them through Christ, assures us they are his promises; as the wonders God wrought in the life, resurrection, and ascension of his Son, confirm faith. There were some in Corinth who denied it, and therefore he takes care, at the very commencement of this Epistle, as he does in beginning most of his letters, to write concerning himself, «Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God.» But with what humility of mind does he associate Timothy with himself! Frequently he puts Timothy, his own convert, one so young, and so much beneath him in position and attainments, on a level with himself; and if we also can help our younger brethren, how willingly should we put our selves side by side with them!...

2. PAUL'S EXPERIENCE AND EXPLANATIONS. CHAPTER 1:8-24 _ 1. His Experience. (2 Corinthians 1:8)_ 2. His Explanations. (2 Corinthians 1:15) The Apostle speaks, first of all, of the trouble he had when he was pressed out of measure (or “weighed down exceedingly, beyond our power”), in so much that he despaired of his life. What experience did he mean? The question cannot be positively answered. It may have been the trouble in Ephesus (Acts 19:1) to which he refers in 1 Corinthians 15:32, “If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts in Ephesus .” Others think that it was

2 Corinthians 1:23 to 2 Corinthians 2:4. Paul now states the real and sufficient reason for his apparent vacillation. He had already paid a visit to Corinth (_cf_. 2 Corinthians 13:2) which had been full of pain to himself as well as to others. It had become only too probable that another visit would lead to even sadder experiences. In fact, it was to spare them that he had not fulfilled his promise. Not that it was true, as some said, that he wished to dictate to them in matters of faith. Far from that, the object of himself and his fellow-workers was simply to cooperate with the church in cultivating their joy. In respect of their faith they were fully established. Was it likely that the
