1-10 The different event of Josiah's early succession from that of Manasseh, must be ascribed to the distinguishing grace of God; yet probably the persons that trained him up were instruments in producing this difference. His character was most excellent. Had the people joined in the reformation as heartily as he persevered in it, blessed effects would have followed. But they were wicked, and had become fools in idolatry. We do not obtain full knowledge of the state of Judah from the historical records, unless we refer to the writings of the prophets who lived at the time. In repairing the temple, the book of the law was found, and brought to the king. It seems, this book of the law was lost and missing; carelessly mislaid and neglected, as some throw their Bibles into corners, or maliciously concealed by some of the idolaters. The “doers” of the first part of the verse are the contractors, or overseers, who undertook the general superintendence; they are to be distinguished from a lower class of “doers,” the actual laborers, carpenters, and masons of the latter portion of the verse. AND LET THEM DELIVER IT INTO THE HAND OF THE DOERS OF THE WORK, THAT HAVE THE OVERSIGHT OF THE HOUSE OF THE LORD,.... That were overseers of the workmen, whose names are mentioned, 2 Chronicles 34:12 into their hands the money was to be delivered by the high priest, when he had taken the account of it, and perhaps along with the king's scribe, see 2 Kings 12:10, AND LET THEM GIVE IT TO THE DOERS OF THE WORK, WHICH IS IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD, TO REPAIR THE BREACHES OF THE HOUSE as their wages for their work; it seems it had not been repaired from the times of Jehoash, a space of two hundred and eighteen years, according to the Jewish chronology m; but Kimchi and Abarbinel make it two hundred and twenty four. m Seder Olam Rabba, c. 24. p. 67.

The fifty-seven years of the reigns of Manasseh and Amon were, according to Kings (not Chronicles), a period of apostasy, which probably continued for the first ten years of Josiah. The prophetic party had consequently remained out of power since the persecution of Manasseh (2 Kings 21:16). They regained their influence by the discovery of the Book of the Law (2 Kings 22:8). OF THE DOERS. These were the overseers. to the doers. These were the labourers....

_into the hand of the doers of the work_ R.V. OF THE WORKMEN. Two sets of people are here both called -doers of the work" (R.V. WORKMEN), first, those who have the oversight, whom we should now call perhaps -contractors" or -architects": and secondly, the actual artificers, carpenters, &c. The former received the money in gross, and paid it out for wages to the several classes of workmen. So R.V. also translates the close of this verse -to the workmen which are in the house of the Lord"....
