Verse 2 Samuel 12:25. _CALLED - JEDIDIAH_] ידידיה, literally, _the beloved of the_ _Lord_. This is the first instance I remember of a minister of God being employed to give a name to the child of one of his servants. But it is strange that the name given by the father was that alone which prevailed....

EXPOSITION 2 SAMUEL 12:1 JEHOVAH SENT NATHAN UNTO DAVID. Though David had remained unrepentant for nearly a year, for we read in 2 Samuel 12:14 that the child was born, yet we are not to suppose that there had been no compunctions of conscience. A man could scarcely pass from utter callousness to a state of mind so tender as that depicted in Psalms 51:1 without some preparation. Assuredly David had suffered much mental distress, but he had given no outward sign of contrition, and possibly, but for Nathan's message, he might have overpowered his conscience, and his self-reproaches have become less frequent and agitating. Either David did; he sent by him to Bathsheba, to acquaint her with the name of the child, that it was to be Solomon; which is not so likely: or "he, David, delivered it into the hand of Nathan the prophet"; to educate it, instruct it, and bring it up in the nurture of the Lord; or rather the Lord sent a message by Nathan the prophet to David, that he loved Solomon: AND HE CALLED HIS NAME JEDIDIAH, BECAUSE OF THE LORD: that is, David also called him by this name, because of the love of the Lord unto him; for Jedidiah signifies "the beloved of the Lord"; a name and character which well agrees with the Messiah, Solomon's antitype, Matthew 3:17....

The birth of Solomon 24. _he called his name Solomon_ The name was given at the time of circumcision (Luke 1:59; Luke 2:21). The Hebrew form of the name is _Shĕlômôh_, the Sept. Salômôn, which by the time of the N.T. had become shortened to the familiar Solomon. It signifies _peaceable_, and was given him in anticipation of the peace and quietness promised to Israel in his reign in contrast to his father's wars (1 Chronicles 22:9). Solomon's birth is naturally related as the sequel to the preceding narrative, though in all probability it did not take place until some four or five years afterwards. See Introd. ch.
