_AND DAVID TOOK HIM MORE CONCUBINES AND WIVES OUT OF JERUSALEM, AFTER HE WAS COME FROM HEBRON: AND THERE WERE YET SONS AND DAUGHTERS BORN TO DAVID._ David took him more concubines and wives. In this conduct David transgressed an express law, which forbade the king of Israel to multiply wives unto himself (Deuteronomy 17:17). David might perhaps suppose that although an Israelite king was prohibited from multiplying wives, he had not exceeded in taking to himself more wives and concubines, because there was no number specified; and as there was little difference in his day between a wife and a concubine, except in the observance of some nuptial formalities, he might fancy it expedient to strengthen his interest by extending his matrimonial connections with his own nobility and the royal families of the neighbouring kingdoms....

11-16 David's house was not the worse, nor the less fit to be dedicated to God, for being built by the sons of the stranger. It is prophesied of the gospel church, The sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee, Isaiah 60:10. David's government was rooted and built up. David was established king; so is the Son of David, and all who, through him, are made to our God kings and priests. Never had the nation of Israel appeared so great as it began now to be. Many have the favour and love of God, yet do not perceive it, and so want the comfort of it; but to be exalted to that, and to perceive it, is happiness. David owned it was for his people's sake God had done great things for him; that he might be a blessing to them, and that they might be happy under him....

Verse 2 Samuel 5:13. _DAVID TOOK_ HIM _MORE CONCUBINES_] He had, in all conscience, enough before; he had, in the whole, _eight wives_ and _ten concubines_. That dispensation permitted _polygamy_, but from the beginning it was not so; and as upon an average there are about _fourteen_ males born to _thirteen_ females, polygamy is unnatural, and could never have entered into the original design of God....

He had six when he was at Hebron, 2 Samuel 3:2, and now he took more, which was not to his honour, and contrary to the law of God, Deuteronomy 17:17; the concubines were a sort of half wives, as the word may signify, or secondary ones, and under the others: AND THERE WERE YET SONS AND DAUGHTERS BORN TO DAVID; besides those in Hebron mentioned in 2 Samuel 3:2....

David's Palace and Family =1 Chronicles 14:1-7 11. _Hiram king of Tyre_ In 1Ki 5:10; 1 Kings 5:18, the name is spelt _Hirom_, in Chron. _Huram_. Josephus (against Apion i. 18) states, on the authority of Menander of Ephesus, who wrote a history of Tyre based upon native Tyrian documents, that Hiram, Solomon's ally and helper in building the Temple, reigned thirty-four years. He also states that Solomon began the Temple in the twelfth year of Hiram's reign. This Hiram therefore reigned only eight years contemporaneously with David, as the Temple was begun in the fourth year of Solomon's reign.
