'David himself (argues the apostle) cannot possibly be the subject of this prophetic psalm of his, for he calls the person intended 'his Lord;' and David's sepulchre, with all that remains of his mortal body, is still in the midst of us. But one there was who claimed to be at once David's Son and David's Lord: Him God raised from the dead without seeing corruption, whereof we all are witnesses; Him, too, hath God exalted to his right hand, in proof of which He hath shed forth that promised Spirit whose operations have startled this whole assembly.'...

22-36 From this gift of the Holy Ghost, Peter preaches unto them Jesus: and here is the history of Christ. Here is an account of his death and sufferings, which they witnessed but a few weeks before. His death is considered as God's act; and of wonderful grace and wisdom. Thus Divine justice must be satisfied, God and man brought together again, and Christ himself glorified, according to an eternal counsel, which could not be altered. And as the people's act; in them it was an act of awful sin and folly. Christ's resurrection did away the reproach of his death; Peter speaks largely upon this. Christ was God's Holy One, sanctified and set apart to his service in the work of redemption. Verse 35. _UNTIL I MAKE THY FOES THY FOOTSTOOL._] It was usual with conquerors to put their feet on the necks of vanquished leaders, as emblematical of the state of subjection to which they were reduced, and the total extinction of their power. By quoting these words, Peter shows the Jews, who continued enemies to Christ, that their discomfiture and ruin must necessarily take place, their own _king_ and _prophet_ having predicted this in connection with the other things which had already been so literally and circumstantially fulfilled. This conclusion had the desired effect, when pressed home with the strong application in the following verse....

FOR DAVID IS NOT ASCENDED INTO THE HEAVENS - That is, David has not risen from the dead and ascended to heaven. This further shows that Psalms 16:1 could not refer to David, but must refer to the Messiah. Great as they esteemed David, and much as they were accustomed to apply these expressions of the Scripture to him, yet they could not be applicable to him. They must refer to some other being; and especially that passage which Peter now proceeds to quote. It was of great importance to show that these expressions could not apply to David, and also that David bore testimony to the exalted character and dignity of the Messiah. Hence, Peter here adduces David himself as affirming that the Messiah was to be exalted to a dignity far above his own. We cannot too often read the story of that wondrous outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost; and let us never read it without asking the Lord to manifest in our midst the fullness of the Spirit's power. We may not have a repetition of the miraculous gifts which were then bestowed upon the apostles and those who were with them; but we may have that gracious influence which shall convince and convert those who gather to hear the Word. Our success in preaching the Word is entirely dependent upon the presence and working of the Holy Spirit; therefore, let our prayer be,Вѕ «Lord God, the Holy Ghost, In this accepted hour, As on the day of Pentecost, Descend in all thy power. «The young, the old inspire With wisdom from above; And give us hearts and tongues of fire, To pray, and praise, and love.» A

His speech is not addressed to foreigners but to the people of Jerusalem, and shows us, as his other speeches do, the style of argument used by Christians in their first great controversy, that with their Jewish neighbours.
