Acts 21:5

And when we had accomplished those days, we departed and went our way; and they all brought us on our way, with wives and children, till we were out of the city: and we kneeled down on the shore, and prayed. And when we had accomplished those days - completed the time of their stay allowed by the ship's company, We departed and went our way; and they all brought us on our way - or 'escorted us,' With wives and children, until we were out of the city: and we kneeled down on the shore, and prayed - (see the note at .) − 5._With their wives and children. _This was no small testimony of love, in that they accompanied Paul out of the city with their wives and children, which thing Luke doth report, partly that he might commend their godliness according as it deserved; partly that he might declare that Paul had that honor given him which was due to him. Whence we do also gather, that he meant nothing less than to provide for his own commodity, seeing that he was not kept back with so great good will, which was a pleasant bait to entice him to stay. And we must also note the solemn custom of praying in weightier affairs, and that being certified by God of the danger, they are more stirred up to pray....

1-7 Providence must be acknowledged when our affairs go on well. Wherever Paul came, he inquired what disciples were there, and found them out. Foreseeing his troubles, from love to him, and concern for the church, they wrongly thought it would be most for the glory of God that he should continue at liberty; but their earnestness to dissuade him from it, renders his pious resolution the more illustrious. He has taught us by example, as well as by rule, to pray always, to pray without ceasing. Their last farewell was sweetened with prayer....

Verse Acts 21:5. _WHEN WE HAD ACCOMPLISHED THOSE DAYS_] That is, the seven days mentioned in the preceding verse. _AND THEY ALL BROUGHT US ON OUR WAY, WITH WIVES AND CHILDREN_] It is not likely that Paul, Silas, Luke, c., had either wives or children with them and it is more natural to suppose that the brethren of Tyre, with _their_ wives and children are those that are meant; these, through affection to the apostles, accompanied them from their homes to the ship; and the coming out of the husbands, wives, and children, shows what a general and affectionate interest the preaching and private conversation of these holy men had excited. _KNEELED DOWN ON THE SHORE, AND PRAYED._] As God fills heaven and earth, so he may be worshipped _every where_; as well, when circumstances require it, on the _seashore_ as in the temple. HAD ACCOMPLISHED THOSE DAYS - When those days were passed. THEY ALL BROUGHT US ON OUR WAY - They attended us. EXPOSITION ACTS 21:1 _When it came to pass float we were parted from them, and had set sail _for _it came to pass, that after we were gotten from them, and had launched, _A.V.; _Cos _for _Coos_, A.V. and T.R.; _next day _for _day following, _A.V. PARTED FROM THEM (ἀποσπασθέντας)_. _"Non sine desiderio magno" (Bengel). "He shows the violence of the parting by saying, ' Having torn ourselves away '" (Chrysostom). The word is properly applied to those who have been unwillingly torn away from their friends (Schleusner and Kuinoel); "denotes the painful separation wrung from them by necessity" (Meyer) In Acts 20:30 it was used in the active voice of false teachers "drawing away" the disciples, _i.e. _Christians

AND WHEN WE HAD ACCOMPLISHED THOSE DAYS,.... The seven days before mentioned: WE DEPARTED AND WENT OUR WAY; from their quarters where they lodged, or from some one house of the disciples, where they met, and had conversed together: AND THEY ALL BROUGHT US ON OUR WAY, WITH WIVES AND CHILDREN, TILL WE WERE OUT OF THE CITY; that is, the disciples, even all of them that dwelt in that city, with their whole families, their wives and children, accompanied the apostle and those that were with him, through the streets of the city of Tyre, till they came out of it to the shore, where lay the ship they were to go aboard; and which was a mark of their affection and respect to the apostle, as well as a token of their public spirit, that they were not ashamed of Christ and his ministers, nor of their profession of the Gospel: AND WE KNEELED DOWN ON THE SHORE AND PRAYED; which was agreeably to the...

FROM MILETUS TO TYRE. The sailing is by day, with a following wind (_cf. Acts 20:15_). After Patara D adds and Myra, where Paul touched on his journey to Rome (see Acts 27:5). Vessels from the East for Rome made for Myra and coasted from there. The vessel from Assos in which Paul was, whether or not chartered for the party, probably went no further than Patara or Myra; he had to tranship, and the rest of his voyage was on the open sea, past the SW. corner of Cyprus, which was sighted. At Tyre there was an enforced delay for the discharge of cargo (_cf._ accomplished the days, Acts 21:5). The Christians in the large city had to be looked for, but they took an interest in Paul and warned him that it was dangerous for him to go to Je

When we had torn ourselves away from them and had set sail, we sailed a straight course and came to Cos; on the next day we reached Rhodes; and from there we came to Patara. There we found a ship which was sailing across to Phoenicia and we embarked on her and set sail. After we had sighted Cyprus and had left it behind on the left hand side we sailed on to Syria and came down to Tyre, for there the ship was to discharge her cargo. We sought out the disciples and we stayed there for seven days. They told Paul through the Holy Spirit to give up his journey to Jerusalem. When we had completed the days we left and proceeded on our journey, while they all, with their wives and children, escorted us outside the city.
