Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever: FOR THREE TRANSGRESSIONS OF EDOM ... BECAUSE HE DID PURSUE HIS BROTHER WITH THE SWORD - (). The chief aggravation to Edom's violence against Israel was, that they were twin brothers, and had the same parents, Isaac and Rebecca (cf. ). The Mosaic law had enjoined the Israelite, therefore, to be kind to the Edomite, "Thou shalt not abhor an Edomite; for he is thy brother ... The children that are begotten of them shall enter into the congregation of the Lord in their third generation" ...

The Prophet now passes to the Idumeans themselves. He had denounced ruin on the uncircumcised nations who delivered up the Jews into their hands: but they deserved a much heavier punishment, because their crime was much more atrocious. The Idumeans derived their origin, as it is well known, from their common father Isaac and bore the same symbol of God’s covenant, for they were circumcised. Since nearness of blood, and that sacred union, could not make them gentle to the Jews, we hence perceive how brutal was their inhumanity. They were then unworthy of being forgiven by God, when he became so severe a judge against heathen nations. Verse Amos 1:11. _FOR THREE TRANSGRESSIONS OF EDOM_] That the _Edomites_ (notwithstanding what _Calmet_ observes above of the _brotherly_ _covenant_) were always implacable enemies of the Jews, is well known; but most probably that which the prophet has in view was the part they took in distressing the Jews when Jerusalem was besieged, and finally taken, by the Chaldeans. EDOM - God had impressed on Israel its relation of brotherhood to Edom. Moses expressed it to Edom himself , and, after the suspicious refusal of Edom to allow Israel to march on the highway through his territory, he speaks as kindly of him, as before; “And when we passed by from our brethren, the children of Esau” Deuteronomy 2:8. It was the unkindness of worldly politics, and was forgiven. The religious love of the Egyptian and the Edomite was, on distinct grounds, made part of the law. “Thou shalt not abhor an Edomite, for he is thy brother: thou shalt not abhor an Egyptian; because thou wast a stranger in his land” Deuteronomy 23:7. AMOS 1:9 F. ON TYRE. Possibly an exilic or post-exilic insertion. The mention of the Phœ nicians would not evoke such hostile feelings, but they too had repeatedly perpetrated crimes that called aloud for punishment. The whole land is here represented by its chief city, Tyre. Tyre is charged with committing a sin similar to that of Gaza. But the Tyrians simply deliver up (or over) the captives to Edom (or to Aram; see on Amos 1:7). It is added that they did not remember the covenant of (between) brothers, possibly the league between Hiram and Solomon (1 Kings 5:12; 1 Kings 9:13 f.), but more probably some later alliance formed with other Phœ nician towns....

Genesis 27:40-41): they were more closely related to each other than was either to any of their other neighbours: and the unbrotherly attitude assumed too often by Edom towards Israel is the head and front of his offence.
