When “he and his princes” were “gone into captivity,” there was no one to make head against the conqueror, and renew revolts. THE AMMONITES. The Ammonites were old enemies. Originally they had pressed Israel from the S. and E. as the Aramæ ans had done from the N. Then they occupied the territory E. of the Jordan from Jabbok to the Arnon. Jephthah defeated and David completely overthrew them (Judges 11:32; 2 Samuel 12:31).
