Verse Amos 9:11. _WILL I RAISE UP THE TABERNACLE OF DAVID_] It is well known that the _kingdom of Israel_, the most profane and idolatrous, fell first, and that the _kingdom of Judah_ continued long after, and enjoyed considerable prosperity under Hezekiah and Josiah. The remnant of the Israelites that were left by the Assyrians became united to the kingdom of Judah; and of the others, many afterwards joined them: but this comparatively short prosperity and respite, previously to the Babylonish captivity, could not be _that_, as _Calmet_ justly observes, which is mentioned here. THE RESTORATION OF GOD'S PEOPLE. This section is probably a post-exilic appendix to the book. The point of view has changed, the fate of Israel being quite different from that contemplated in the rest of the book, and the ideas reflecting the mind of a much later Jewish community. Yahweh will destroy, but He will not utterly destroy (_cf._ end of Amos 9:8, if genuine). Israel must be sifted and scattered among the nations (Amos 9:9).
