That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the LORD that doeth this. For "all the pagan" nations stand on the same footing as Edom: Edom is the representative of them all. By these words the Prophet shows that the kingdom under Christ would be more renowned and larger than it had ever been under David. Verse Amos 9:12. _THAT THEY MAY POSSESS THE REMNANT OF EDOM_] Bp. _Newcome_ translates this clause as follows: "That the residue of men may seek Jehovah, and all the heathen who are called by my name." Here, instead of אדום _Edom_, he reads אדם _Adam, men_ or _mankind_, which is the reading of the _Arabic_, and some MSS. of the _Syriac_, and of Acts 15:17. The Pachomian MS. of the _Septuagint_ adds here, ὁπως εκζητησωσι με, _that they may seek me_. And the _Arabic_ has [Arabic] _the_ _Lord_; and in stead of יירשו _yireshu_, "they shall possess," the learned bishop seems to have read ידרשו _yidreshu_, "they may seek;" and thus the text resembles the quotation by St. James,...

THE RESTORATION OF GOD'S PEOPLE. This section is probably a post-exilic appendix to the book. The point of view has changed, the fate of Israel being quite different from that contemplated in the rest of the book, and the ideas reflecting the mind of a much later Jewish community. Yahweh will destroy, but He will not utterly destroy (_cf._ end of Amos 9:8, if genuine). Israel must be sifted and scattered among the nations (Amos 9:9).
