1 CORINTHIANS—NOTE ON 1 Corinthians 12:13 in one Spirit we were all baptized. Like the other “baptism in the Holy Spirit” passages in the NT (Matthew 3:11; Mark 1:8; Luke 3:16; John 1:33; Acts 1:5; Acts 11:16), this one seems to refer to the cleansing and empowering work the Holy Spirit does at conversion. Baptism is used metaphorically here. It refers to the Spirit’s work within believers to unite them to the larger body of believers. Water baptism is an outward symbol of this reality (see Romans 6:4). made to drink. Probably a reference to the outpouring of God’s Spirit on his people (see John 7:37; Romans 5:5).
