The statement now made is to the effect: penalty inflicted not as passion dictates but as principle demands. ὁ δοῦλος ὁ γνοὺς, etc.: describes the case of a servant who knows the master's will but does not do it (μηδὲ ποιήσας), nay, does not even intend or try to do it (μὴ ἑτοιμάσας), deliberately, audaciously negligent. δαρήσεται πολλάς (πληγάς): many stripes justly his portion.
