he priests and Pharisees of course perceived the drift of these parabolic speeches about the two sons, the vine-dressers, and the rejected stone, and (Matthew 21:46) would have apprehended Him on the spot (Luke 20:19) had they not feared the people. ἐπεὶ, since, introducing the reason of the fear, same as in Matthew 21:26. εἰς προφήτην = ὡς π., Matthew 21:26, and in Matthew 14:5, also in reference to John.
