Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were much perplexed concerning them whereunto this would grow.

'WHEREUNTO THIS WOULD GROW'-'what would come of this' (NASV); 'were at. loss to know what had become of them' (Knox); 'wondering what would happen next' (Wey). They were completely at. loss concerning what they should do. They had threatened the apostles, imprisoned them, but they were still gaining many converts. Thus far all their efforts had been for naught. They couldn't see any end in sight.

McGarvey notes, 'instead of thinking, What will God do with us if we continue to fight against these manifestations of his power? The wonder is that they did not immediately disperse, and try to conceal the fact that they had come together at all.' (p. 92)
