Although some scholars have regarded the reading as a Western non-interpolation, it is more likely that the words were omitted because “the writer scrupled to appear to class VIhsou/j among the daimo,nia” (so Knowling; i.e. the clause implies that Paul’s hearers understood VAna,stasij as a female deity parallel with Jesus).
