Jesus teaches about inner purity Matthew 15:1-20; Mark 7:1-23; Matthew 15:1 Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, Mark 7:1 Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem. Mark 7:2 And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.

Mark 7:3 For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash [their] hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.

Mark 7:4 And [when they come] from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, [as] the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables. Matthew 15:2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. Mark 7:5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? Matthew 15:3 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

Matthew 15:4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

Matthew 15:5 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to [his] father or [his] mother, [It is] a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;

Matthew 15:6 And honour not his father or his mother, [he shall be free]. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. Matthew 15:7 [Ye] hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, Mark 7:6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, Matthew 15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with [their] lips; but their heart is far from me. This people honoureth me with [their] lips, but their heart is far from me. Matthew 15:9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching [for] doctrines the commandments of men. Mark 7:7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching [for] doctrines the commandments of men. Mark 7:8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, [as] the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

Mark 7:9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

Mark 7:10 For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:

Mark 7:11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, [It is] Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; [he shall be free].

Mark 7:12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;

Mark 7:13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye. Matthew 15:10 And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: Mark 7:14 And when he had called all the people [unto him], he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one [of you], and understand: Matthew 15:11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. Mark 7:15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man. Matthew 15:12 Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying? Matthew 15:13 But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. Matthew 15:14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. Mark 7:16 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. Matthew 15:15 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable. Mark 7:17 And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable. Matthew 15:16 And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding? Mark 7:18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Matthew 15:17 Do not ye yet understand, Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, [it] cannot defile him; that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? Mark 7:19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? Matthew 15:18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. Mark 7:20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. Matthew 15:19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: Mark 7:21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Mark 7:22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: Matthew 15:20 These are [the things] which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man. Mark 7:23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
