Must be first partaker [δ ε ι π ρ ω τ ο ν - μ ε τ α λ α μ β α ν ε ι ν]. Better, Must be the first to partake. His is the first right to the fruits of his labor in the gospel. The writer seems to have in his eye 1 Corinthians 9:7, where there is a similar association of military service and farming to illustrate the principle that they who proclaim the gospel should live of the gospel.
