Was not deceived; by the serpent in the first transgression. The serpent first assailed the woman, as being most open to his arts, and having deceived her, he made use of her to persuade her husband. Compare the words of the woman, "The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat"; and the words of God to the man, "Because thou hast hearkened to the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten," Genesis 3:13; Genesis 3:17. The headship was given to the man, not to the woman.
