And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. As to the time here mentioned, it is a certain or predetermined period’ the kings of the south and the north we have already shewn to refer to Egypt and Syria, such being their position with respect to Judea. The word נגח _neech, confliget, _is literally he shall “push with the horns,” while the word translated, “he shall rush as a whirlwind,” is deduced from שער _segner, _“to be stormy.” The angel here predicts the numerous victories by means of which the Romans should extend their empire far and wide, although not without great difficulties and dangers. Reference seems to be made to the Roman empire, the fourth monarchy, in its pagan, early Christian, and papal states. The end of the Lord's anger against his people approaches, as well as the end of his patience towards his enemies. While the kingdoms of _Egypt_ and _Syria_ were subsisting, the _king of the south and the north_ applied to them exclusively: but they did not exist at the time of which the prophet speaks; therefore _other southern_ and _northern_ powers must be sought.
