The date is repeated by the historian in order to show that the intimation made to Abraham (Genesis 15:13) was realized, and that the time of deliverance corresponded with the most minute exactness to the prophetic announcement....

37-42 The children of Israel set forward without delay. A mixed multitude went with them. Some, perhaps, willing to leave their country, laid waste by plagues; others, out of curiosity; perhaps a few out of love to them and their religion. But there were always those among the Israelites who were not Israelites. Thus there are still hypocrites in the church. This great event was 430 years from the promise made to Abraham: see Galatians 3:17. So long the promise of a settlement was unfulfilled. EXPOSITION The narrative of the departure from Egypt is followed, not unnaturally, by a notification of the length of the sojourn, which is declared to have been a space of four hundred and thirty years. In the "Introduction" to the Book, we have examined the question, which here arises, 1. As to the soundness; and 2. REFLECTIONS.—1. Moses embraces the favourable moment. The people march immediately, an immense body; besides a mixed multitude, who, from curiosity, or a conviction of the truth, went out with them. _Note;_ In the church there is a mixed multitude of professors, but there are many Egyptians among them. 2. Observe the memorable night: just four hundred and thirty years from the date of the promise to Abraham. The Egyptians remembered this night to their sorrow, the Israelites with unspeakable joy in their future generations.
