Exodus 4:19

_AND THE LORD SAID UNTO MOSES IN MIDIAN, GO, RETURN INTO EGYPT: FOR ALL THE MEN ARE DEAD WHICH SOUGHT THY LIFE._ All the men are dead. The death of the Egyptian monarch took place in the 429th year of the Hebrew sojourn in that land; and that event, according to the law of Egypt, took off his proscription of Moses, if it had been publicly issued....

19._And the Lord said _(56) _unto Moses _Some connect this sentence with what follows, as if God had spoken to his servant after permission to return had been given him by his father-in-law; but my opinion rather is, that what had before been omitted is here inserted out of its place. Such repetition is frequent in the Scriptures. (57) Moses, therefore, adds to what he had already said, that the fear of danger was removed, since God had testified that the recollection of his having slain the Egyptian had ceased. For this would have been a stumblingblock at the very outset, if Moses had supposed that this accusation would have met him; not because his conscience smote him before God, but because he would have been rejected by the perverse judgments of men. 18-23 After God had appeared in the bush, he often spake to Moses. Pharaoh had hardened his own heart against the groans and cries of the oppressed Israelites; and now God, in the way of righteous judgment, hardens his heart against the teaching of the miracles, and the terror of the plagues. But whether Pharaoh will hear, or whether he will forbear, Moses must tell him, Thus saith the Lord. He must demand a discharge for Israel, Let my son go; not only my servant, whom thou hast no right to detain, but my son. It is my son that serves me, and therefore must be spared, must be pleaded for. In case of refusal I will slay thy son, even thy first-born. As men deal with God's people, let them expect so to be dealt with....

Verse Exodus 4:19. _IN MIDIAN_] This was a new revelation, and appears to have taken place _after_ Moses returned to his father-in-law previous to his departure for Egypt....

EXPOSITION EXODUS 4:18-2 If Moses had, as we have supposed, been accepted into the Midianitish nation, he would need permission to withdraw himself from the tribal head. This head was now Jether, or Jethro, Moses' connexion by marriage, perhaps his brother-in-law, perhaps a less near connexion. Nations and tribes were at this time anxious to keep up their numbers, and jealous of the desertion even of a single member. Jethro, however, made no opposition to the return of Moses to Egypt, even though he designed to be accompanied by his wife and sons (Exodus 4:20). Scripture gives no indications of the motives which actuated him. Perhaps the Midianites were at this time straitened for want of room. Perhaps the peculiar circumstances of Moses were held to justify his applicatio

After he had obtained leave of his father-in-law to quit Midian, but before he left it; GO, RETURN INTO EGYPT: that is, directly, immediately; before he had only given him a commission at large to go thither, but had not fixed the time when he should go; but now he orders him to set forward at once: FOR ALL THE MEN ARE DEAD WHICH SOUGHT THY LIFE; to take it away, the king of Egypt, and his ministers, and the friends of the Egyptian Moses had slain; and this is said to encourage him to go; and though Moses had never expressed his fear on this account, or made it an objection, yet it might lie secretly in his heart, and be one reason of his backwardness to go into Egypt, and which was now removed....

EXODUS 4:19 A J. MOSES IS RECALLED BY YAHWEH TO EGYPT. This piece probably originally followed Exodus 2:23_ a_, the narrative of the revelation at the bush having been antedated by the compiler, to dovetail in with E's story. The pl. sons is probably due to the editor, to fit Exodus 18:2: in J (Exodus 2:24 and Exodus 4:25) only one son is mentioned. Exodus 4:20 b E continues Exodus 4:17.
