_AND MOSES SPAKE SO UNTO THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL: BUT THEY HEARKENED NOT UNTO MOSES FOR ANGUISH OF SPIRIT, AND FOR CRUEL BONDAGE._ Moses spake. The increased severities inflicted on the Israelites seem to have so entirely crushed their spirits, as well as irritated them, that they refused to listen to any more communications from the two divinely-commissioned ambassadors (Exodus 14:12). Even the faith of Moses himself was faltering; and he would have abandoned the enterprise in despair, had he not received a positive command from God to revisit the people without delay, and at the same time renew their demand on the king in a more decisive and peremptory tone. Verse Exodus 6:12. _UNCIRCUMCISED LIPS?_] The word ערל _aral_, which we translate _uncircumcised_, seems to signify any thing exuberant or superfluous. Had not Moses been remarkable for his excellent beauty, I should have thought the passage might be rendered _protuberant lips_; but as this sense cannot be admitted for the above reason, the word must refer to some natural impediment in his speech; and probably means a want of distinct and ready utterance, either occasioned by some defect in the organs of speech, or impaired knowledge of the Egyptian language after an absence of _forty_ years. UNCIRCUMCISED LIPS - An uncircumcised ear is one that does not hear clearly; an uncircumcised heart one slow to receive and understand warnings; uncircumcised lips, such as cannot speak fluently. The recurrence of the hesitation of Moses is natural; great as was the former trial this was far more severe; yet his words always imply fear of failure, not of personal danger (see Exodus 3:11)....

EXPOSITION EXODUS 6:10-2 The Israelites having shown themselves, for the time, unimpressible, God commands Moses to make his next effort upon the Pharaoh. He is to enter into his presence once more, and demand, without circumlocution or obscurity, that the Israelites be allowed to quit the land (Exodus 6:11). Moses, however, demurs. He had done God's will with respect to the people readily and at once, expecting _that_,_ as _he had persuaded them before, so he would a second time. P'S SECOND ACCOUNT OF MOSES'S CALL. Till the method of Hebrew compilers was understood, it was natural to take this as the account of a second call. It is now seen to be the account of his call in the latest source, as written by priestly annalists after the Exile. Moreover, it was this passage which put in the hands of the French physician, Jean Astruc (p. 122), the clue to the criticism of the Mosaic books. MOSES SPAKE BEFORE THE LORD— The phrase _before the Lord,_ evidently denotes some visible appearance of the Deity, that divine _Shechinah,_ in which God discovered himself to Moses. _Uncircumcised lips,_ according to the meaning of the phrase in other parts of Scripture, expresses _vile, unworthy, unfit;_ and therefore Moses here, with great modesty and humility, declares his own unworthiness and inability to persuade Pharaoh. The expression seems similar in import to that which he uses, ch. Exodus 4:10 though, perhaps, it is more emphatically lowly.
