Ezekiel 22:28

And her prophets have daubed them with untempered morter, seeing vanity, and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord GOD, when the LORD hath not spoken. HER PROPHETS HAVE DAUBED THEM WITH UNTEMPERED MORTAR, SEEING VANITY, AND DIVINING LIES UNTO THEM - referring to the false assurances of peace with which the prophets flattered the people, that they should not submit to the King of Babylon (note, ; ; ; Jeremiah 23:16; Jeremiah 28:9)....

23-31 All orders and degrees of men had helped to fill the measure of the nation's guilt. The people that had any power abused it, and even the buyers and sellers find some way to oppress one another. It bodes ill to a people when judgments are breaking in upon them, and the spirit of prayer is restrained. Let all who fear God, unite to promote his truth and righteousness; as wicked men of every rank and profession plot together to run them down....

Verse Ezekiel 22:28. _HER PROPHETS_] Even those who profess themselves to be my prophets, have been unfaithful in the discharge of their office; have _soothed_ the people in their sins, and pretended to have oracles of _peace_ and _safety_ when I had not spoken to them....

EXPOSITION EZEKIEL 22:1, EZEKIEL 22:2 MOREOVER, etc. The word connects what follows with THE WORD OF THE LORD which began in Ezekiel 20:2. That connection is, indeed, sufficiently indicated by the recurrence of the formula, "Wilt thou judge?" (see note on Ezekiel 20:4). In obedience to the commands which that question implied, Ezekiel has once more to go through the catalogue of the sins of Judah and Jerusalem. It is not without significance that he applies the very epithet of BLOODY CITY (Hebrew, _city of bloods_

Palliated their sins, declared it to be right to shed the blood they did; and seize on the estates of men; but this, though it might for a while satisfy the consciences of these princes, and stop the clamours of the people against them; yet would not last long, but be like the building of a wall with bad stuff, which will not stand; and daubing it with mortar, which will soon wash off. So the Targum, "and the false prophets which are in the midst of her are like to those that build a wall, and daub it with mere clay, without straw;'' Ezekiel 13:10. SEEING VANITY, AND DIVINING LIES UNTO THEM; pretending visions from God, when what they see, or pretend to see, is nothing but vanity and emptiness, mere delusions; and prophesying good things, peace and prosperity, when they are all lies;

Ezekiel 22:1; Ezekiel 23:1. Before the sharpened sword of justice and retribution does its dreadful work, the Lord uncovers the guilt and vileness of the city and lays bare the corruption of her prophets, priests, and princes, as well as of the people. The violence and abomination of Jerusalem are revealed in Ezekiel 22:1; the smelting furnace in Ezekiel 22:17 is the symbol of Jehovah's fiery indignation against Jerusalem and its inhabitants. _have daubed them_ daubed FOR THEM, seconding them. The persons called "princes" may be referred to, but not exclusively. Cf. ch. Ezekiel 13:10, and Ezekiel 13:6-7....

C. The Corrupt Land 22:23-31 TRANSLATION (23) And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, (24) Son of man, say to her: You are a land not cleansed, nor rained upon in the day of indignation. (25) There is a conspiracy of her prophets in her midst, like a roaring lion tearing the prey; they have devoured souls, they have taken treasure and precious things, they have multiplied her widows in the midst of her. (26) Her priests have done violence to My law, and have profaned My holy things; they have not distinguished between the holy and the common, nor have they taught the difference between the unclean and clean, and they have hidden their eyes from My sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. (27) Her princes in her midst are like wolves tearing the prey: to shed blood, and to destroy souls, in order to acquire illicit gain. (28) And her prophets have daubed for them with white plaster...

ANOTHER INDICTMENT OF JERUSALEM The various religious and social evils that prevail in the city are recited (Ezekiel 22:1). Their coming punishment is then predicted, first in direct terms (Ezekiel 22:13), and next under the figure of a smelting furnace (Ezekiel 22:17). Lastly, all classes in Jerusalem, prophets, priests, princes, and people, are included in the general condemnation (Ezekiel 22:23)....
