Tarshish was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of all kind of riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded in thy fairs. TARSHISH - Tartessus in Spain, a country famed for various metals, which were exported to Tyre. WITH SILVER, IRON, TIN, AND LEAD, THEY TRADED IN THY FAIRS. Much of the "tin" [ bªdiyl (H913)] probably was conveyed by the Phoenicians from Cornwall to Tarshish. TRADED IN THY FAIRS - `they made thy exchanges,' or 'did barter with thee' (Fairbairn); [ `izbownaayik (H5801), from a root, 'to leave,' `aazab (H5800)] something left in barter for something else: or else the fair or mart where on market-days merchandise is left for sale....

Not only when at church, praying and hearing, but when in markets and fairs, buying and selling. In all our dealings we should keep a conscience void of offence. God, as the common Father of mankind, makes one country abound in one commodity, and another in another, serviceable to the necessity or to the comfort and ornament of human life. See what a blessing trade and merchandise are to mankind, when followed in the fear of God. Besides necessaries, an abundance of things are made valuable only by custom; yet God allows us to use them. But when riches increase, men are apt to set their hearts upon them, and forget the Lord...

Verse Ezekiel 27:12. _TARSHISH_ WAS _THY MERCHANT_] After having given an account of the _naval_ and _military_ equipment of this city, he now speaks of the various _places_ and _peoples_ with whom the Tyrians traded, and the different kinds of merchandise imported from those places. By _Tarshish_ some understand the _Carthaginians_; some think _Tartessus_, near the straits of Gibraltar, is meant; others, _Tharsis_ in Cilicia. The place was famous for all the useful metals, _silver, iron, tin_, and _lead_. All these they might have had from _Britain_....

Ezekiel 27:1. Ezekiel 27:1 give an interesting description of the world-wide commerce and glory of this proud world city. “Sic transit gloria mundi,” thus passeth the glory of the world! Of the proud and wicked mistress of the sea nothing but ruins remain and her very site is no longer known. What her past glory was is made known by the prophet, yet Ezekiel never had been to that city, nor did he have any knowledge of her grandeur, her great wealth and far reaching commerce. God revealed all unto him. The description of her great commerce reminds us of that coming world-system as described in the last book of the Bible, the Revelation. The name Tarshish (Tartessus) was given to the district of country lying outside the Straits of Gibraltar on the lower Baetis, the Guadalquiver (Wadi el Kebîr, great river). _with silver … in thy fairs_ Rather apparently: SILVER … THEY BROUGHT AS THY WARES.
