Then came he unto the gate which looketh toward the east, and went up the stairs thereof, and measured the threshold of the gate, which was one reed broad; and the other threshold of the gate, which was one reed broad. AND WENT UP THE STAIRS - seven in number (). AND MEASURES THE THRESHOLD - the sill (Fairbairn). AND THE OTHER THRESHOLD. Fairbairn considers there is but one threshold, and translates, 'even the one threshold, one rod broad.' But there is another threshold mentioned in . The two thresholds here seem to be the upper and the lower....

Verse Ezekiel 40:6. _WENT UP THE STAIRS THEREOF_] As the temple was built upon an eminence, there must have been steps on the outside, opposite to each door, to ascend by. And it appears there were _steps_ to go up from _one court_ to _another_, see Ezekiel 40:22; Ezekiel 40:26; Ezekiel 40:34; Ezekiel 40:37; and also from the _court of the priests_ to the _sanctuary_, Ezekiel 40:49. EXPOSITION The magnificent temple-vision, as it is usually styled, a description of which forms the closing section of this book (Ezekiel 40-48.), was the last extended" word" communicated to the prophet, and was given him in the five and twentieth year of the Captivity, _i.e. _about B.C. 575. Two years later he received a brief revelation concerning Egypt, which, in compiling his volume, he incorporated with the other prophecies relating to the same subject (Ezekiel 29:17). Of the present oracle as a whole the significance will be best understood when its several parts have been examined in detail. Meanwhile it may suffice to note that it manifestly connects itself with the promise in Ezekiel 37:27,...

THEN CAME HE UNTO THE GATE WHICH LOOKETH TOWARD THE EAST,.... Or, "whose face is the way to the east" r; to the east of the house or temple; not to the eastern gate of the wall about the house; but to the eastern gate of the outward court; see Ezekiel 40:20, for the man came from the wall he had measured unto this gate; which, with the other gates after mentioned, spiritually design Christ himself, who is the way, door, and gate, John 14:6 and this eastern gate more especially, where the prince sat, Ezekiel 44:3, and which led into the outward court; and over against which was another that led into the inner court, and so straight on to the holy of holies, at the west end of the house. Chapter s 40-48. The final nine Chapter s of this book form the climax of the great prophecies of Ezekiel; they belong to the most difficult in the entire prophetic Word. Once more the hand of the Lord rests upon the seer and in the visions of God he is brought into the land of Israel. In the very beginning of this grand finale we learn therefore that the visions concern the land of Israel. Let us remember, that after the fall of Jerusalem had been announced to Ezekiel (Ezekiel 33:21), his prophetic utterances and visions concern the future when Israel is to be regathered and restored to the land. The previous two Chapter s dealt with the last invasion of the land of Israel and the complete overthrow of Gog and its hordes.
