17-21 Daniel and his fellows kept to their religion; and God rewarded them with eminence in learning. Pious young persons should endeavour to do better than their fellows in useful things; not for the praise of man, but for the honour of the gospel, and that they may be qualified for usefulness. And it is well for a country, and for the honour of a prince, when he is able to judge who are best fitted to serve him, and prefers them on that account. Let young men steadily attend to this chapter; and let all remember that God will honour those who honour him, but those who despise him shall be lightly esteemed....

Verse Ezekiel 41:20. _FROM THE GROUND UNTO ABOVE THE DOOR_] The temple was _thirty_ cubits high, 1 Kings 6:2, the gate was _fourteen_ cubits, Ezekiel 40:48. The _palm trees_ and the _cherubim_ were the same height as the _gate_ or _door_. The windows were above the door....

EXPOSITION The present chapter continues the description of "the house," and falls into four subdivisions. (1) The interior of the temple, or the holy and most holy places (Ezekiel 41:1); (2) the wall and the side buildings (Ezekiel 41:5); (3) the _gizrah_, or separate place (Ezekiel 41:12); (4) the projecting portions of the temple building (Ezekiel 41:15). From the floor of the holy of holies to above the door of it to the east, where was the entrance into it; or from thence to the cieling, as the Septuagint version: "were cherubim and palm trees made"; either in rows one above another, quite up to the place mentioned; or they were made so large, that each cherub and palm tree reached from the ground to above the door, or to the cieling: AND ON THE WALL OF THE TEMPLE: that is, they were not only thus placed in the holiest of all; but in the temple, or holy place on the wall of it all around; and shows, that in the state of the church in the latter day, which this part of the building represents more especially, will be great numbers of Gospel ministers, who will faithfully and uprightly preach it to men; see Daniel 12:4....

The interior of the Temple was boarded or panelled no stone was to be seen the walls were carved with double-faced cherubs and palm-trees. In front of the most holy place was a small altar of wood, apparently to be identified with the table of the shew-bread (in olden times regarded as food for the God). Between the holy and the most holy place were carved doors with swinging wings. (The meaning of the words in Ezekiel 41:15 and Ezekiel 41:26 rendered galleries and thick beams is very uncertain.)...

This word has the extraordinary points (App-51), the dots indicating that the word is repeated by mistake from Ezekiel 41:20,...

The prophet is to be conceived as standing in the holy place, and when he speaks of the "door" he evidently refers to the end walls and not to the side walls. It remains obscure whether it be the "door" of the holiest or that of the holy place to which he refers. _and on the wall … temple_ The word "temple" is marked as suspicious by dots over it, and is omitted in some MSS. and in the ancient versions. The clause is to be connected with Ezekiel 41:21....
