Verse Ezekiel 41:6. _THE SIDE CHAMBERS WERE THREE_] We find by _Joseph_. Antiq. viii. 3, 2, that round Solomon's temple were chambers _three_ stories high, each story consisting of _thirty_ chambers. It is supposed that _twelve_ were placed to the _north_ of the temple, _twelve_ to the _south_, and _six_ to the _east_. _ENTERED INTO THE WALL_] The beams were admitted into the outer wall, but they rested on projections of the inner wall....

The side-chambers of Solomon’s Temple were built against the temple-wall, but in Ezekiel’s vision the desire to keep the temple still more separate and holy led to a fresh arrangement, namely, that another wall should be built at such a distance from the temple-wall as to allow of chambers being built against it, facing the temple-wall, and opening into a passage or corridor (F), separating them from the temple itself. There were three stories of them, and thirty in every storey, in all ninety; there were such chambers round about Solomon's temple, and so many stories of them, though their number is not expressed, 1 Kings 6:5, but Josephus z says they were thirty, and one above another, three stories of them, as here. Some think twelve were on the north side, twelve on the south, and six on the west; or fifteen on the north, and fifteen on the south. Round the north, west, and south sides were cells in three stories, thirty on each story, possibly for the accommodation of Temple furniture, gifts, etc....

Ezekiel 41:5-11. The side chambers or annexe to the house The text in some places is confused, but the general meaning is clear. Round about the wall of the house on three sides (N., W. and S.) were built side-chambers in three stories, thirty chambers in each story, Fig. 2, D. The chamber on the ground floor was 4 cubits wide (N. to S.), but in the second story the width was greater than in the first, and in the third story greater than in the second. The reason of this greater wideness of the upper stories was that the wall of the house on which the chambers were built diminished in thickness as it ascended.
