Genesis 21:6

_AND SARAH SAID, GOD HATH MADE ME TO LAUGH, SO THAT ALL THAT HEAR WILL LAUGH WITH ME._ God hath made me to laugh - literally, God hath prepared laughter (joy) for me; i:e., as Havernick paraphrases it, 'That at which I formerly indulged a sceptical laugh has now been so turned by God as to become to me the subject of laughter or joy.' ALL THAT HEAR WILL LAUGH WITH ME, [Septuagint, sungchareitai moi] - will rejoice with me; congratulate me. These words carry us back to the first announcement of Sarah's child. 'In our record,' continues Havernick, 'there is no thought of a proper strictly so-called derivation of the name of Isaac: it is the simple naive oriental mode of narration, which delights in a pregnant style of expression. This might come about the more readily, since, because of the first laugh of Abraham, God had commanded him to call his son х_ YITSCHAAQ_ (H3327)], laughing.'...

1-8 Few under the Old Testament were brought into the world with such expectations as Isaac. He was in this a type of Christ, that Seed which the holy God so long promised, and holy men so long expected. He was born according to the promise, at the set time of which God had spoken. God's promised mercies will certainly come at the time which He sets, and that is the best time. Isaac means "laughter," and there was good reason for the name, ch. Genesis 17:17; Genesis 18:13. When the Sun of comfort is risen upon the soul, it is good to remember how welcome the dawning of the day was. When Sarah received the promise, she laughed with distrust and doubt. When God gives us the mercies we began to despair of, we ought to remember with sorrow and shame our sinful distrust of his power and promise, when we were in purs...

Verse Genesis 21:6. _GOD HATH MADE ME TO LAUGH_] Sarah alludes here to the circumstance mentioned Genesis 18:12; and as she seems to use the word _to laugh_ in this place, not in the sense of being _incredulous_ but to express such _pleasure_ or _happiness_ as almost _suspends_ the reasoning faculty for a time, it justifies the observation on the above-named verse. See a similar case in Luke 24:41, where the disciples were so overcome with the good news of our Lord's resurrection, that it is said, _They believed not for joy_....

AND SARAH SAID, GOD HATH MADE ME TO LAUGH,.... This she said on occasion of the name of her son Isaac, which name her husband had given him by divine direction, and to which she assented. BIRTH OF ISAAC. Genesis 21:1_ b_ and Genesis 21:2 _b_ - Genesis 21:5 belong to P, the editor having changed Elohim into Yahweh in Genesis 21:1_ b_. To J Genesis 21:1_ a_, Genesis 21:2_ a_, Genesis 21:7 may be assigned, and Genesis 21:6 a to E....

_God hath made me to laugh_ R.V. marg. _prepared laughter for me_. Once more in connexion with the birth of Isaac the thought of laughter recurs: see Genesis 17:17 (P), Genesis 18:12-15 (J). This time we have the tradition preserved by E. It is not clear that the two clauses of this verse mean the same thing. According to R.V. text, the first clause refers the laughter to Sarah's own happiness and exultation: the second clause refers it to the merry reception of the unexpected news by those who would laugh incredulously. According to R.V. marg., the latter meaning attaches also to the first clause; and both clauses, meaning the same thing, are explained by Genesis 21:7. The R.V. text is perhaps to be preferred.

GOD HATH MADE ME TO LAUGH— Sarah, alluding to the _laughter_ of herself and her husband, whence their son had his name, observes, that God had now caused them to _laugh_ indeed, or in such a manner as not only expressed their own _joy,_ but would occasion all her friends, all who should hear it, to _rejoice_ with her, and to _congratulate_ her felicity....
