From first to last, he betrayed no symptom of vacillation, though there must have been a fearful conflict between affection and duty. The trial was protracted almost to the last moment; and just as the life of the victim was on the wing, the trial was suddenly terminated. ABRAHAM OBEYS THE DIVINE COMMAND TO SACRIFICE ISAAC, AND IS REWARDED BY THE SPARING OF HIS SON. The main narrative (Genesis 22:1) is from E, and the story, which is a literary masterpiece, is told with a reticence more effective than any detailed exposition of the tragedy implicit in it could have been. The pathos of the son's question in Genesis 22:7, the father's answer in Genesis 22:8, is unsurpassable. And the racked feelings of the father, the unconsciousness of the son, are left to the reader's imagination. The point is that Abraham accepts, with unfaltering obedience, the demand for the costliest offering, recognising God's right to make it. From E; but Genesis 22:15 are, probably, from another source, possibly R. As a piece of simple and vivid narrative, this passage from E's narrative is unsurpassed. SPECIAL NOTE ON THE SACRIFICE OF ISAAC This episode occupies an important place in the religious teaching of Genesis. It is (1) the crowning test applied to the faith of the patriarch Abraham, and (2) the supreme example of the difference between the God who revealed Himself to the patriarchs, and the gods of the nature-religions of the Semitic peoples. It has, however, raised difficulties in the minds of many readers, who have been unable to reconcile the command to offer Isaac for a burnt-offering with their conception of a good God. The following points deserve, in this connexion, a careful consideration. 1. _Human Sacrifice_. This was a religious custom widely prevalent among the ancient Semite
