ABRAHAM OBEYS THE DIVINE COMMAND TO SACRIFICE ISAAC, AND IS REWARDED BY THE SPARING OF HIS SON. The main narrative (Genesis 22:1) is from E, and the story, which is a literary masterpiece, is told with a reticence more effective than any detailed exposition of the tragedy implicit in it could have been. The pathos of the son's question in Genesis 22:7, the father's answer in Genesis 22:8, is unsurpassable. And the racked feelings of the father, the unconsciousness of the son, are left to the reader's imagination. The point is that Abraham accepts, with unfaltering obedience, the demand for the costliest offering, recognising God's right to make it. ABRAHAM TOOK THE WOOD FOR. BURNT OFFERING AND LAID IT UPON ISAAC. Leaving the young men behind, he went forward with his son. The wood prepared at home for the burnt offering, laid upon Isaac, the promised seed, the son slain "in. figure," is. fitting type of the Son of God carrying his own cross. It will be noted that Isaac could not have been. small boy, or he could not have carried the wood. The only indication of the time of his life is in this statement. Josephus says that he was 25 years old; some of the Rabbins make him older. Others insist that he was the age of the antetype, the Lord Jesus Christ. We do not think that the term "lad," used in verse 5, will admit of his being an adult. He was probably somewhere from sixteen to twenty....
