_AND HE LIGHTED UPON A CERTAIN PLACE, AND TARRIED THERE ALL NIGHT, BECAUSE THE SUN WAS SET; AND HE TOOK OF THE STONES OF THAT PLACE, AND PUT THEM FOR HIS PILLOWS, AND LAY DOWN IN THAT PLACE TO SLEEP._ And he lighted upon a certain place, [Hebrew, _ WAYIPGA`_ (H6293) _ BAMAAQOWM_ (H4725)] - and he fell (lighted) upon the place. The verb in the original signifies, to light upon, either with purpose or accidentally. The definite article prefixed to "place" shows that he had purposely chosen as his first night's resting-place the spot which had been distinguished by the encampment of Abraham shortly after his entrance into Canaan (Genesis 12:8); or that, the gates of Luz being shut, he was undesignedly, on his part, compelled to rest for the night, which proved to be 'the place' his

Verse Genesis 28:11. _A CERTAIN PLACE, AND TARRIED THERE_] From Genesis 28:19, we find this _certain place_ was _Luz_, or some part of its vicinity. Jacob had probably intended to reach Luz; but the sun being set, and night coming on, he either could not reach the city, or he might suspect the inhabitants, and rather prefer the open field, as he must have heard of the character and conduct of the men of Sodom and Gomorrah. Or the gates might be shut by the time he reached it, which would prevent his admission; for it frequently happens, to the present day, that travellers not reaching a city in the eastern countries previously to the shutting of the gates, are obliged to lodge under the walls all night, as when once shut they refuse to open them till the next day.
