EXPOSITION GENESIS 32:24 AND JACOB WAS LEFT ALONE (probably on the north bank of the Jabbok; but _vide_ on Genesis 32:23); AND THERE WRESTLED—thus assaulting in his strong point one who had been a wrestler or heel-catcher from his youth (Murphy). The old word נֶאֱבַק, niph. of אָבַק, unused, a dehorn, from חָבַק, dust, because in wrestling the dust is raised (Aben Ezra, Gesenius), or a weakened form of חָבַק, to wind round, to embrace (Furst), obviously contains an allusion to the Jabbok (_vide_ on Genesis 32:22)—A MAN—called an angel by Hosea ...

Which question is put, not as being ignorant of it, but in order to take occasion from it, and the change of it, to show that he had granted his request, and had blessed him, and would yet more and more: AND HE SAID, JACOB; the name given him at his birth, and by which he had always been called, and therefore tells it him at once, not staying to ask the reason of the question....

Genesis 32:1. _And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him._ When he left the promised land, he had a vision of angels, ascending and descending upon the ladder, as if to bid him farewell. Now that he is going back, the angels are there again to speed him on his way home to the land of the covenant, the land which the Lord had promised to give to Abraham and his seed. Genesis 32:2. _And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim._ The marginal reading is «Two hosts, or, camps.» The angels of the Lord were encamping round about the man who feared him, though shore had been much in his character and conduct which the Lord could not approve....

His name is asked, not for information, but in order to call attention to his former, and to show the need of. new man who would be worthy of. new name. The name Jacob, meaning "Supplanter," was. continual reminder of the narrow, selfish life that he had lived in the past. He had supplanted his brother by overreaching him, had been overreached by Laban in the matter of his daughters, but had then craftily overreached him in business. Henceforth he must not be. "Supplanter." There must be. new life with. new name....

Jacob's Wrestling with the Angel This passage forms the climax of Jacob's history. It records the occasion on which his name is changed to Israel, and describes his personal meeting with the Divine Being, whose blessing he obtains. The religious significance of the story turns upon (1) the sudden mysterious wrestling by night; (2) Jacob's persistence in his demand for a blessing; (3) the blessing given, and symbolized by the new name, Israel; (4) the physical disability, a memorial of acceptance and spiritual victory, and a symbol of the frailty of earthly strength, in the crisis of life, when God meets man face to face.
