_WHEN JUDAH SAW HER, HE THOUGHT HER TO BE AN HARLOT; BECAUSE SHE HAD COVERED HER FACE._ When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot. Such a character as that which Tamar impersonated was to be found only in women without the gate of a well-ordered town (Revelation 22:15). BECAUSE SHE HAD COVERED HER FACE. His impression was founded not on the special form or style of the veil as betokening a prostitute [for tsa`iyp is applied to the veil of Rebekah (Genesis 24:65)], but to the concealment of her features, and the place where she lingered. The Septuagint adds the following clause, kai ouk epegnoo auteen, and he did not recognize her. But this reading has no authority....

15._When Judah saw her_. It was a great disgrace to Judah that he hastily desired intercourse with an unknown woman. He was now old; and therefore age alone, even in a lascivious man, ought to have restrained the fervor of intemperance. He sees the woman at a distance, and it is not possible that he should have been captivated by her beauty. (142) The lust kindles him as a stallion neighs when it smells a mare. Hence we gather, that the fear of God, or a regard to justice and prosperity, cannot have flourished greatly in the heart of one who thus eagerly breaks forth to the indulgence of his passions. He is therefore set before us as an example, that we may learn how easily the lust of the flesh would break forth, unless the Lord should restrain it; and thus, conscious of our infirmity, let us desire from the Lord, a spirit of continence and moderation. Verse Genesis 38:15. _THOUGHT HER TO BE A HARLOT_] See the original of this term, Genesis 34:31. The Hebrew is זונה _zonah_, and signifies generally a person who prostitutes herself to the public for hire, or one who lives by the public; and hence very likely applied to a _publican_, a _tavern-keeper_, or _hostess_, Joshua 2:1; translated by the Septuagint, and in the New Testament, πορνη, from περναω, to sell, which certainly may as well apply to her _goods_ as to her _person_. It appears that in very ancient times there were public persons of this description; and they generally veiled themselves, sat in public places by the highway side, and received certain _hire_.

EXPOSITION GENESIS 38:1 AND IT CAME TO PASS. The present chapter appears to interrupt the continuity of the narrative of Joseph's history. Partly on this account, and partly because the name Jehovah occurs in it (Genesis 38:7, Genesis 38:10), it has been pronounced a later Jehovistic interpolation (Tuch, Bleek, Davidson, Coleuso). Its design has been explained as an attempt to glorify the line of David by representing it as sprung from Judah (Bohlen), or to disclose the origin of the Levitate law of marriage among the Jews (Knobel); but the incidents here recorded of Judah and his family are fitted to reflect dishonor instead of glory on the ancestry of David (Havernick)

By her posture and the place she was in: BECAUSE SHE HAD COVERED HER FACE; with her veil, that he did not know her; for this is not given as a reason why he took her to be an harlot; the reason of this was, because she sat in the public road; but having covered her face he could not discern who she was, and therefore, from the other circumstance, concluded that she was an harlot, and sat there to prostitute herself to any that passed by....

GENESIS 38. JUDAH AND TAMAR. The source is J, but not the same stratum as that to which the Joseph story belongs. There is not room for the events either before or after the events of Genesis 37, nor does the Joseph narrative suggest that Judah left his brothers and lived the independent life here described. The chronology is quite inconsistent with the view that Genesis is a unity. Judah was roughly about twenty when Joseph, at the age at least of seventeen (Genesis 37:2), went into Egypt. The interval between that event and the journey of Jacob into Egypt was not more than twenty-two years. Within that period the whole of the events of this chapter have been crowded; moreover, Perez has two sons by its close (Genesis 46:12). To a certain extent the chapter contains tribal history.
