When Jacob arrived, in the course of his addresses, at Joseph, the thought of that favourite son imparted a sudden animation to the soul of the venerable patriarch; because his bosom seems to have heaved with emotion, and he pours out wishes for the personal welfare of Joseph, or foreshadows the future fortunes of his descendants with a flow of sentiment and a redundancy of expression which shows how fully the sympathies of the father went with the utterances of the prophet. 22._Joseph is a fruitful bough_. Others translate it, “a son of honor,” (214) and both are suitable; but I rather incline to the former sense, because it seems to me that it refers to the name Joseph, by which _addition _or _increase _is signified; although I have no objection to the similitude taken from a tree, vehicle, being planted near a fountain, draws from the watered earth the moisture and sap by which it grows the faster. The sum of the figure is, that he is born to grow like a tree situated near a fountain, so that, by its beauty and lofty stature, it may surmount the obstacles around it. For I do not interpret the words which follow to mean that there will be an assemblage of _virgins _upon the walls, whom the sight of the tree shall have attracted; but, by a continued metaphor, I suppose the tender and smaller branches to be called daughters. 22-27 The blessing of Joseph is very full. What Jacob says of him, is history as well as prophecy. Jacob reminds him of the difficulties and fiery darts of temptations he had formerly struggled through. His faith did not fail, but through his trials he bore all his burdens with firmness, and did not do anything unbecoming. All our strength for resisting temptations, and bearing afflictions, comes from God; his grace is sufficient. Joseph became the shepherd of Israel, to take care of his father and family; also the stone of Israel, their foundation and strong support. It is not a mere collection of originally isolated utterances on the tribes, but was from the first put in the lips of Jacob, though expansions and alterations have, no doubt, taken place. It need hardly be said that it is not the utterance of Jacob himself. It would be inexplicable that his vision should fix just on the period here covered.
