_AND THEY THAT WENT IN, WENT IN MALE AND FEMALE OF ALL FLESH, AS GOD HAD COMMANDED HIM: AND THE LORD SHUT HIM IN._ As God had commanded him: and the Lord shut him in. Attempts have been made to account for the use of two divine names here, by alleging that, in His commands to Noah respecting the ark, God as the Creator was providing for His creatures, whereas "the Lord," who shut in Noah and his family, was providing for the preservation of His Church. But this is an over-refinement, and the interchange of the divine names does not seem to bear any occult meaning. "Shut him in" - literally, shut the door after (around) him; intimating that, although a destructive calamity was about to fall upon the world, he was the special object of divine care and protection; while to those without, the season of grace was all but over (cf. Matthew 25:10)....

16._And the Lord shut him in_. This is not added in vain, nor ought it to be lightly passed over. That door must have been large, which could admit an elephant. And truly, no pitch would be sufficiently firm and tenacious, and no joining sufficiently solid, to prevent the immense force of the water from penetrating through its many seams, especially in an irruption so violent, and in a shock so severe. Therefore, Moses, to cut off occasion for the vain speculations which our own curiosity would suggest, declares in one word, that the ark was made secure from the deluge, not by human artifice, but by divine miracle. Verse Genesis 7:16. _THE LORD SHUT HIM IN._] This seems to imply that God took him under his especial protection, and as he shut HIM _in_, so he shut the OTHERS _out_. Genesis 7:1. _And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark;_ Notice that the Lord did not say to Noah, «Go into the ark,» but «Come,» plainly implying that God was himself in the ark, waiting to receive Noah and his family into the big ship that was to be their place of refuge while all the other people on the face of the earth were drowned.
