Genesis 7:9

_THERE WENT IN TWO AND TWO UNTO NOAH INTO THE ARK, THE MALE AND THE FEMALE, AS GOD HAD COMMANDED NOAH._ There went in two and two. The animals were not searched for, hunted out, and driven by Noah into the ark; they filed into it spontaneously: and perhaps their movements may be explained in part by some sensible impression and uneasiness on their bodies, like what is supposed to be the monitor of birds of passage, or by that natural instinct which prompts animals, under a secret pre-sentiment of danger, to seek refuge with man; but, over and above any such physical impulse, they must have been prompted by an overruling divine direction, as it is impossible, on any other principle, to account for their going in pairs....

1-12 The call to Noah is very kind, like that of a tender father to his children to come in-doors when he sees night or a storm coming. Noah did not go into the ark till God bade him, though he knew it was to be his place of refuge. It is very comfortable to see God going before us in every step we take. Noah had taken a great deal of pains to build the ark, and now he was himself kept alive in it. What we do in obedience to the command of God, and in faith, we ourselves shall certainly have the comfort of, first or last. This call to Noah reminds us of the call the gospel gives to poor sinners. Christ is an ark, in whom alone we can be safe, when death and judgment approach. The word says, "Come;" ministers say, "Come;" the Spirit says, "Come, come into the Ark." Noah was accounted righteous, not for his own righteousness, but as an heir of the righteousness which is by faith, Hebrews...

- The Ark Was Entered 2. טהור _ṭâhôr_ “clean, fit for food or sacrifice.” 4. יקוּם _y__e__qûm_ “standing thing; what grows up, whether animal or plant.” Compare קמה _qāmâh_ “stalk, or standing corn.” Genesis 7:1 Here is found the command to enter the ark. The general direction in the preceding chapter was given many years ago, before the ark was commenced. Now, when it is completed, a more specific command is issued. “For thee have I seen righteous before me.” Noah has accepted the mercy of God, is therefore set right in point of law, and walks aright in point of practice. THERE WENT IN TWO AND TWO UNTO NOAH INTO THE ARK,.... Of themselves, as Jarchi and Aben Ezra, being impressed with an instinct from God so to do; or by the ministry of angels, as observed Genesis 6:20 there were two of a sort, and some think four: THE MALE AND THE FEMALE; and of some seven, or seven pairs, as before observed: AS GOD COMMANDED NOAH; which respects his own and his family's entrance and the creatures; both were commanded by God, and attended to by Noah, who was obedient in all things....

Genesis 7:1. _And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark;_ Notice that the Lord did not say to Noah, «Go into the ark,» but «Come,» plainly implying that God was himself in the ark, waiting to receive Noah and his family into the big ship that was to be their place of refuge while all the other people on the face of the earth were drowned. The distinctive word of the gospel is a drawing word: «Come.» Jesus says, «Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest;» and he will say to his people at the last, «Come, ye blessed of my Father inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.» «Depart» is the word of justice and judgment, but «Come» is the word of mercy and grace. «The Lord said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark;»...

TWO OF EVERY SORT Compare (Genesis 7:2). In addition to two animals, etc, commanded (Genesis 6:19) to be preserved for future increase ("they shall be male and female"), the further command was given more than 100 years later to take of clean beasts, that is, beasts acceptable for sacrifice, seven each. Exodus gives ten such beasts, or but seventy in all. Modern ships carry hundreds of live beasts, with their food, besides scores of human beings....
