20-23 The Lord will preserve Zerubbabel and the people of Judah, amidst their enemies. Here is also foretold the establishment and continuance of the kingdom of Christ; by union with whom his people are sealed with the Holy Ghost, sealed with his image, thus distinguished from all others. Here also is foretold the changes, even to that time when the kingdom of Christ shall overthrow and occupy the place of all the empires which opposed his cause. The promise has special reference to Christ, who descended from Zerubbabel in a direct line, and is the sole Builder of the gospel temple. CHAPTER 2:20-23 The Fifth Address The final address of Jehovah's messenger is altogether prophetic. It is addressed exclusively to Zerubbabel, the governor, a son of David. He tells the princely leader that the heavens and the earth will be shaken; it is the same as in Haggai 2:6. When that comes the throne of the kingdoms will be overthrown; the power of the kingdoms of the nations (the ten kingdoms; Daniel 2:1 will be destroyed, for in that day, the falling stone, typifying the second coming of Christ, will make an end of Gentile dominion. A REITERATION AND, INCIDENTALLY, AN EXPLANATION OF THE PROPHECY OF OCT. 21. Haggai 2:20_ a_ is an editorial addition. The throne of kingdoms (_i.e._ Persia) will be destroyed by internal strife, with the result that Judah will be freed, and in Zerubbabel will be seen a reversal of the woes pronounced upon his grandfather, Jehoiachin (Jeremiah 22:24). Haggai evidently regards Zerubbabel as destined to be king....

Haggai 2:20-23. The Fourth Prophecy In a short, final prophecy, uttered on the same day as that which preceded it, Haggai addresses Zerubbabel as the Ruler and Representative of the Jewish nation, and the Predecessor and Type of the true King of the Jews. The former prediction (ver. 6, 7) of the shaking of heaven and earth, and the overthrow of mighty nations is repeated. But to Zerubbabel, and in him to the nation which he represented, a gracious promise of safety and distinction is vouchsafed....

_GOD'S PROMISE TO ZERUBBABEL -- HAGGAI 2:20-23_ The Lord gave Haggai a special message for Zerubbabel. It was God's plan to raise up a new leader for His people and that leader would be Zerubbabel. God promised to overthrow the heathen nations by turning them against each other in battle. God's message was, "tell my servant Zerubbabel that I, the Lord All-Powerful, have chosen him, and he will rule in my name." In Jeremiah 22:24-25 we read "As I live, saith the LORD, though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were the signet upon my right hand, yet would I pluck thee thence; And I will give thee into the hand of them that seek thy life, and into the hand of them whose face thou fearest, even into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of the Chaldeans."
