And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathereth eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped. MY HAND HATH FOUND AS A NEST THE RICHES OF THE PEOPLE - implying the ease with which he carried off all before him. AS ONE GATHERETH EGGS (THAT ARE) LEFT - by the parent bird. THERE WAS NONE THAT MOVED THE WING - image from an angry bird resisting the robbery of its 'nest.' OR PEEPED - chirped even low (). No resistance was offered me, of deed, or even word....

14._And my hand hath found as a nest. _He adds, that it cost him no trouble to vanquish kings and amass their wealth; and he illustrates this by a comparison. God designs to correct his people for their hypocrisy, and bring them nearer to him; but is that Sennacherib's design? No; he designs to gratify his own covetousness and ambition. AND MY HAND HATH FOUND, AS A NEST - By a beautiful and striking figure here, the Assyrian monarch is represented as describing the ease with which he had subdued kingdoms, and rifled them of their treasures. No resistance had been offered. He had taken them with as little opposition as a rustic takes possession of a nest, with its eggs or young, when the parent bird is away. EGGS THAT ARE LEFT - That is, eggs that are left of the parent bird; when the bird from fright, or any other cause, has gone, and when no resistance is offered. HAVE I GATHERED ALL THE EARTH - That is, I have subdued and plundered it. This shows the height of his self-confidence and his arrogant assumptions. EXPOSITION ISAIAH 10:1 The prophecy begun in Isaiah 9:8 terminates with this stanza, which contains a warning against injustice and oppression, addressed to Israel and Judah equally, and accompanied by the threat of a "day of desolation," when those who have refused to make God their Refuge will have no resource, but to go into captivity with the "prisoners," or to perish with the "slain." ASSYRIA'S BOASTFULNESS AND ITS PUNISHMENT. This prophecy, so far as it is Isaiah's, must be later than the capture of Carchemish in 717 and before Sennacherib's invasion in 701. Narrower limits cannot be fixed. Non-Isaianic material appears to be present in it. ISAIAH 10:5. Assyria is Yahweh's rod to smite any nation that has aroused His anger, but, inspired by lust of blood, plans to exterminate many peoples, and boastfully thinks to destroy Jerusalem with her divine nonentities, less powerful than those of cities she has seized.
