Isaiah 10:2

To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless! TO TURN ASIDE THE NEEDY FROM JUDGMENT. The effect of their conduct is, to pervert the cause of the needy, as the Hebrew may be translated. In the English version, "from judgment" means 'from obtaining justice.' AND TO TAKE AWAY THE RIGHT - `to make plunder of the right' (rightful claim) (Horsley)....

2._To keep back. _(156) Others render it, _to cause them to turn aside_; but the true meaning is, _to keep back the poor from judgment_, or make them lose their cause. This is the iniquity and oppression which he had mentioned in the former verse, that _the poor are deprived of their rights_, and are robbed for the sake of the rich, and go away mocked from the judgment-seat, while everything is laid open to plunder. He chiefly mentions _the poor_, because for the most part they are destitute of help and assistance. While magistrates and judges ought to have assisted them more than others, they allow themselves greater liberty, and indulge more contemptuously in oppressing them. Those who have wealth, or friends, or favor, are less liable to be oppressed; for they have arms in their hands to defend, and even to revenge themselves. TO TURN ASIDE - Their sentences have the effect, and are designed to have, to pervert justice, and to oppress the poor, or to deprive them of their rights and just claims; compare Isaiah 29:21; Proverbs 27:5. THE NEEDY - DALIYM - דלים _dalı̂ym_. Those of humble rank and circumstances; who have no powerful friends and defenders. “From judgment.” From obtaining justice. AND TO TAKE AWAY - To take away by violence and oppression. EXPOSITION ISAIAH 10:1 The prophecy begun in Isaiah 9:8 terminates with this stanza, which contains a warning against injustice and oppression, addressed to Israel and Judah equally, and accompanied by the threat of a "day of desolation," when those who have refused to make God their Refuge will have no resource, but to go into captivity with the "prisoners," or to perish with the "slain." ISAIAH 9:8 TO ISAIAH 10:4. YAHWEH SMITES EPHRAIM WITH STROKE AFTER STROKE. It is generally agreed that Isaiah 5:26 formed the closing strophe of this poem (p. 440). The date is probably before the coalition of Syria and Ephraim (Isaiah 9:11 f.), _i.e._ between 740 and 735. It is one of Isaiah's earliest prophecies.
